Hi,
I've got a problem with my PC. Basically whenever I open a program (Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer any other program installed) a box pops up and tells me that the application has a problem and needs to close. However if I don't acknowledge the pop up box the program continues to run without any problems. It seems to be a trojan but I can't find it. I have just god rid of a couple of other trojans such as timed.exe and volumec.exe so I think it maybe tied up with them as they all started at the same time. I have run Autoruns but could not find the one responsible for this problem.

Any ideas?

What OS (Win XP/2000, etc) are you using? What type of anti-virus are you using? Have you performed any anti-spyware scans? Have your tried doing your scans in "SAFE MODE"?

If your running Win XP/2000, download and scan with AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 in "SAFE MODE".
(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware.) Be sure to print out and follow the AVG Anti-Spyware Install-Scan Instructions.

Then perform this online Virus scan: Trend Micro Housecall <- Use "Autoclean" and manually delete what it can't clean.
[Watch the Address bar in IE. You may receive alerts that "This site might require the following ActiveX control...Click here to install...". Click on that alert and then Click Install ActiveX component.]

timed.exe is added by the Troj/Bdoor-LV backdoor Trojan. Backdoor Trojans are very dangerous. They are used by remote attackers as part of an exploit to to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge. When infected by one of them you should disconnect the computer from the Internet until your system is cleaned. If your computer was used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for email, eBay and forums. You should consider all your passwords to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. Do not change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breech. Because your computer was compromised please read How to report ID theft, fraud, drive-by installs, hijacking and malware.

I followed your instructions and now seem to have a clean computer. My virus scan wasn't up to date so I guess it's kind of my fault. :trumpet:

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent reinfection from an old restore point. Any malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to set a new RESTORE POINT:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Click the "More Options" Tab.
6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
