I got an MP3 player this Xmas and when I connected it via USB a Windows message appeared saying Windows had detected new hardware and was looking for drivers for it. However, when I click on My Computer there is no extra device shown. Do I need drivers installed for the system to show the new device in My Computer?

On a related subject, I was trying to use Windows Media Player 9 to rip files from a CD to the MP3 but the player was not listed in the Items on Device side of the window. I presume the two problems are related and I need drivers installed first? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank

Did you check for compatibility? Is the player limited to USB 2.0, or can it use earlier USB? Did you check the manufacturer's website for downloads? I have a Cruzer thumbdrive, and it needs downloaded programs to work with Win 98.

Hi again Herk,

The software provided with the player is for Windows XP so I cannot get drivers for ME. I'm wondering why the computer does not show the device in My Computer - when I connect a card reader it does show this in My Computer.

Frank.

You may be out of luck. There's no way to get XP software to work in 98. Have you checked the manufacturer's website? (Assuming they have one . . . )

Just spoke to customer service - seems there is no way I can use the player on a computer running ME. Looks like I have to check out upgrading on these forums (or shell out for a new system!)

Frank
