Firs I'd like to say he's an idiot, but I won't get into that. My brother's pc is a reduced legacy HP MCE XP pc. I was on it and the whole thing froze, so I hard booted and shut it down. When I started it up I got "Boot disc failure. Please insert System disc and press Enter" problem is.. he doesn't have one. Recovery won't boot either.

My hard drive has XP home, not MCE. If we can boot it.. can we access his MCE os files and make a backup on XP home?

You should be able to set it as slave and recover the files. Some HP drives are "Locked" making it hard to install a OS on.
You can use a Live Linux like Puppy or Knoppix to boot to RAM and burn your data to CD or DVD. Puppy is only a 80 Mb download.

Not really. You need the correct Recovery CD for that model computer. If you try and boot from a full XP CD or an OEM version it will produce an error message.
HP will send you replacement CDs for the cost of overnight shipping.

HP sent a blank CD with that pc, that's it. if this is as simple as a boot problem then my boot files should cover it (moded of course), correct? we had 2 pcs at one time, so we have another os hd.

The blank CD was so you could make a Recovery CD from your computer. If your Backup partition is corrupted you will be able to order a replacement CD. Unless it is XP Home or older. XP Home was stopped being supported on 10-5-2006 by Microsoft. I also believe this includes the Media Center Edition.

This is not entirely correct. The support ended for Windows 98, Windows Me, on July 11, 2006. The support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 ended on On October 10, 2006.
