Hey guys,

Im new here and thought this would be a great place to post my problem. I got a new laptop a few weeks ago and only recently windows updates stopped working. Everything else is working fine, but I keep having this problem. I try and update and it gives me this error:

UPDATES WERE UNABLE TO BE SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED

The following updates were not installed:

Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1

After checking C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log it says:

I can see update.exe is not there.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

SYMPTOMS
When you use Automatic Updates or the Windows Update Web site to try to install software update 898461 in Microsoft Windows XP, the installation fails. The Windows Update History log shows that the update installation was canceled.

CAUSE
This issue can occur if there is a problem with the Spupdsvc.exe file. The path of the file is %windir%:\Windows\System32\Spupdsvc.exe.

Note %windir% is a placeholder for the folder where Windows is installed.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, rename the Spupdsvc.exe file to a different file name, such as SpupdsvcOld.exe.
