yesterday, windows promted me that updates were ready to install. i let it do it's thing. right after it was done and restarted, a red circle with an x in it apeared in the task bar and a pop up apeared saying my computer was infected and it would download software to remove the infection. without me doing anything, it downloaded... and installed... and ran... pest trap. i uninstalled pesttrap with add/remove programs. after seeing that pest trap was prompting me to purchase, i went and got both Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, hoping to remove the problem and get the pop ups to stop. at that point, i had thought that the pop ups were a new windows thing. running both of those didn't get rid of it.

unfortunatly, i didn't keep notes of everything i did. i noticed the names of several spyware/trojans/viruses/?? in the scans i did with Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. i started looking around online for fixes for them. the manual fixes i found listed long lists of processes & files & registry enteries to delete... none of which i could find. i followed one set of directions and downloaded and installed AVG antivirus. i also downloaded TrojanHunter.

after all that, i still get the popup apearing whenever i start my browser. both AVG virus and TrojanHunter catch it and "repair" it... but it reapears at each start up. i have tried following the path that AVG virus and TrojanHunter give for the infected file. each time it is a new file in the c:/documents and settings/user folder. deleteing those files doesn't stop it from reapearing.

oh, and it erased my desktop image. the desktop is just a plain blue feild now.

sorry to be so scattered and unclear.

thank you thank you thank you to listening and trying to help!

Hi,

Please follow these directions in the order given. You will need to print these directions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following item:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gwiz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Open Notepad and copy and paste the text inside the codebox into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
"SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"

- Save this as fix.reg -> choose to save as *all files -> and place it on your desktop.
- It should look like this: Posted Image
- Double-click on it and, when you are asked if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click YES/OK.

• Please set your system to show all files.
- Go to Start > open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View tab and, under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
- Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
- Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK

• Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Navigate to and delete the following files if present:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.dll

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

• Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe
Double-click onto SmitfraudFix.exe and a folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

• Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

Posted Image

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns, so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: C:\rapport.txt

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note: The file process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool." It is not a virus but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs; therefore, they may alert the user.

• Post back with the C:\rapport.txt and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

thank you!!!!

i followed your instructions.

the following were present:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gwiz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe

but this one wasn't:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.dll
- instead, there was ntoskrnl.exe i left it there just in case, since it didn't match.

not alerts or warnings have come up this time booting from the various spyware/virus blockers.

C:\rapport.txt log:

Hi,

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

I don't know why this site is in your Trusted Zone. Unless there is a specific reason why it's there as opposed to being bookmarked, I suggest that you check it as well:
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.jenminnis.com

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Reboot your computer.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
• Perform an onlinescan with Panda Online. Please use this scanner instead of any other scanner! You have to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component, allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When the download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the "See Report" button, then "Save Report" and save it to a convenient location.

• Post back with the results of the Panda Online scan and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi,

Don't worry about the Norton NProtect files - they're quarantined and won't do any harm. Here's a link that goes through the steps of deleting the files:
http://antivirus.vt.edu/help/quarantine.asp

Your log looks clean.

• You do, however, have an outdated version of Java which, because of security reasons, needs to be updated immediately. To update Java:
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- Check the box at the top that says: "Accept License Agreement".
- The page will refresh.
- Click on the top link to download "Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language" and save to your Desktop.
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java by checking any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the coffee cup icon next to it.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your Desktop, double-click on the downloaded Java file to install the newest version.

After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked

Downloaded Applets
Downloaded Applications
Other Files

Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

• You need to change your settings for cookies.
In Firefox, click Tools -> Options - Privacy tab -> Cookies tab
- Tick "Allow sites to set Cookies"
- Tick "for the originating site only"
- Do not tick "unless I have removed cookies from this site"
- In "Keep Cookies" - select either "ask me every time" or "until I close Firefox" (whichever you prefer)
- Click OK
- When you do accept cookies, choose the option "Session Only"
In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy tab -> Advanced
- Tick "Override automatic cookie handling"
- Under "First-party Cookies" - tick "Prompt"
- Under "Third-party Cookies - tick "Block"
- Click OK and Apply
Rule of thumb: Don't accept cookies for every site - be selective. You can deny most cookies, and you will be blocked from most of the tracking cookies.
In Firefox, when you do accept cookies, use the option "Session Only".

• Please set your system to hide system files.
- Go to Start and open My Computer
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab and, under Hidden files and folders, check Do not show hidden files and folders
- Check Hide file extensions for known file types
- Check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- Click Apply, then OK.

• If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

• Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

• Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

• To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-spyware scanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.
Also, make sure that your virus-scanner, the one that is already installed on your system, is always up to date!

• Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Happy surfing again!
