Hello all,

Long time, no post. For some reason when my sister logged onto her username, her background and everything else was completely set back to default. All her documents were missing and she had basically lost everything. Whatever the hell happened didn't effect any of the other usernames, just hers, how and why did this happen?!

By the way, i somehow found all her files in the end, but i had to go through My Computer> C: >Documents and Settings > {Username} > {Usernames Documents}

Why is it all empty? And how can i quickly make back-ups of all her files?

Please!!

Many thanks in advance

A few questions:

Does your sister have an administrative account or a limited access account?

Do the other users have administrative or limited access accounts?

Had she just updated to IE7 before this happened?

Had she just used a third party defragmenter before this happened and if so which one?

Administrative account.

Do the other users have administrative or limited access accounts?

Out of the 6 accounts, only one is limited.

Had she just updated to IE7 before this happened?

No.

Had she just used a third party defragmenter before this happened and if so which one?

She did not use a third party defragmenter.

Hmm. Well the two possibilities I had thought of have now been ruled out given the answers to my questions.

As for backing up. Do you have thumb drives aka memory sticks or CD's? I would copy all the files she wants to keep onto one or more of those for a back up. If all the files are in one folder, you can simply copy the entire folder to the thumb drive or CD if it is not too large.

Look in Windows Explorer and drill down to the Documents and Settings folder. Are there 2 accounts with your sister's name there (one may have a .000 after it). If so, then another account was created.

Easiest fix is to copy everything to a FAT32 hard disk - this'll strip the NTFS permissions from the files so that she can access them from other accounts.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
