I have used/installed Norton AV, AD-Aware 6.0, and BHO. I still have some kind of hijack virus that takes control of IE. Ad-Aware detects that something is trying to modify the home page, but only asks to block it.

Here's a log from Hijack This:

You are running an outdated version of HijackThis.. Delete the copy you have and download the latest version of HijackThis!: Download here HJT 1.99.. Save it on your Desktop. You will need now to unzip hijackthis.exe to a permanent folder, such as c:\hjt . This has to be done as HijackThis creates backups. You may need to use these backups.

First create a new folder:
A. Click My Computer icon on your desktop
B. Click C: drive
C. Click the File menu --> New --> Folder, a folder "New folder" will be created.
D. Rename it HJT

Unzip hijackthis.exe to the c:\HJT folder.

Download Ad-aware SE 1.05 (this will uninstall the outdated Ad-Aware 6): here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.
Using Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware & Hijackers from Your Computer

Download System Security Suite here:
System Security Suite Download & Tutorial. Unzip it to your desktop.
Install the program. Don't use it yet.

Download, install and UPDATE SpyBot Search & Destroy.
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware from Your Computer

Download, install and update Spyware Blaster.
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware, Hijackers, and Malware

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run AdAware, press the "Start" button, uncheck "Scan for negligible risk entries", select "Perform full system scan" and press "Next". Let AdAware remove anything it finds.

Run SpyBot Search & Destroy and remove anything it finds.

With all windows and browsers closed.
Clean out temporary and Temporary Internet Files.
A. Open System Security Suite.
B. In the Items to Clear tab thick:
- Internet Explorer (left pane): Cookies & Temporary files
- My Computer (right pane): Temporary files & Recycle Bin
Press the Clear Selected Items button.
Close the program.

REBOOT normally.

Run HijackThis! again and post a new log please.

Hi. Thanks for the instructions. I followed them but got mixed results.
I wasn't able to "fix" everything that was selected in the HijackThis application.
But, I am noticting a big difference already...so maybe we are real close.

- When in safe mode, HijackThis did NOT show the following entry:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank
So, I wasn't able to try and remove it. However, it still shows up when in normal mode.

Here's the HijackThis log after following your instructions:
(you'll notice that one of the 018 - Filters did not get removed.)

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank

O18 - Filter hijack: application/octet-stream - {6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999} - C:\WINDOWS\NavExt.dll

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

REBOOT and post a new log please.

Hi.
I was only able to get HijackThis to fix or remove only the R1 entry and not the O18 entry. Here's a new log file. If it makes it easier, I am capable of doing a regedit if necessary or easier. Thankyou very much for your help. I think that removing the navext.dll really helped out.
Thanks again.

Note: it is strongly recommended that you back up the registry before making any changes to it
Backing up the Windows registry

It is also recommended to disable temporarily TeaTimer. It could interfere with the fix.
russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

Click START -> RUN -> type REGEDIT and click OK
The Registry Editor opens.

Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter

look for these: application/octet-stream - {6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999} - C:\WINDOWS\NavExt.dll

and delete the NavExt.dll value.

REBOOT and post a new log please.

Hi Cryo...
Happy NewYear!

Here's what I did:
1. Disabled TeaTimer and got the same results with HijackThis.

2. Went into RegEdit and found the entry you sent me to, however, there was no value = C:\WINDOWS\NavExt.dll. The value was actually "{6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999}".

Here's a picture in the attachment reg_entry.doc.

3. I searched the registry and found the following entry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999}\InprocServer32
Default Value = C:\WINDOWS\NavExt.dll

So, I deleted NavExt.dll value here.

Rebooted and here's the HijackThis log file.

Thanks for your help.

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Click File menu -> Save and name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
Save this file on the desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\application/octet-stream]

Double-click on the fix.reg file on your desktop, and when it prompts to merge say Yes, and this will repair some registry entries.

REBOOT and post a new log please.

Do any of these need to be cleaned up?

Better do not edit the registry. The entries are harmless without the file .

Sorry for delay with this posting, I was not able to access the computer until now.

Log looks clean...great job !

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

How did I get infected ? With steps so it does not happen again !

Glad I was able to help.

This is a restriction. Leave it, if it was set by you using a software like Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster or another similar protection software, or if it was set by your system administrator.

Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Thank you for all your help and instructions.

Regarding the restriction you mentioned:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

I didn't intentionally add it, but in the course of working this problem, I used several different tools, so it's possible it was set by one of the tools you mentioned.

Is it restricting any kind of normal activity that I haven't noticed yet ? Or is it just more protection?

Thanks
