Networking 2 Computers Without Using An Internet Connection

I need some help here, my laptop recently crashed, no backups, as i was talking to my tech. teacher in school he told me that i could put backup's on my desktop computer, putting the two in a network. He told me it can be done without an internet connection... how do i go about doing this? Any help would be appreciated!
