I have tried to remove "wintools" from m computer using the information supplied on this site. I have used Hijack This (see log below), followed all directions, entered safe mode, yada...yada...yada. However, the file is STILL located in my Program Files\Common Files. I have tried deleting it and every time I send it to the recycle bin it tells me it can't. Access Denied. I can't find any other indicators of wintools on my system: it's not in the add/remove programs window, my hijack this log isn't showing any reference (again, see below), in safe mode I can't find it in the services (although when I click on services there I do not get a list in the right hand window; I have to manually scroll below the services folder on the left), it's not running in my task manager processes, etc. However, when I open windows explorer, THERE IT IS!! Program Files\Common Files\Wintools - and it's not deletable!!!! What else can I do!?!

Here is a copy of my Hijack This log BEFORE I followed the directions for removal.

Also, Symantec reccommended that I clear out my temp file by using the run: %temp% command and deleting all content. However, there are a few very "weird" files in there (strange names, non-recognizalbe) that will not delete. I am told that the files are being used - even though nothing that I know of is running. I am assuming that this wintools program or something similar is using them. I tried opening the files using the online feature to pick the application to open them but I get an error page by explorer saying the webpage could not be found. The addy in the window at that time has crazy symbols, etc in it. Could these problems be related?? Anyone know how to delete these files? How can I see what is running in memory to find out what is using them?

Alrighty there is more that just WINTools, you have some major issues with this log and you are way behind on your windows updates. First, lets make sure your XP-Firewall is turned on so we prevent you from getting really foobar-ed when you connect this thing to the net. Once we have you cleaned up, we will get you updated with all your security patches.
  • Click Start -> click Control Panel -> and then double–click Network Connections.
  • Right Click the Dial–up or Local Area connection you use to access the Internet and then click Properties
  • On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, put a check in the box next to "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet"
  • Click OK
Now download this free program called Adaware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Please see our tutorial on how to set up adaware for scanning http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/use-ad-aware-2007-to-remove-spyware/

The big thing is to make sure you update it and set the scanning functions so it can remove some baddies from your machine.

Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 repeatedly while the computer reboots, and scan again with Adaware.

while in safe mode, clean out your temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Reboot, scan again with HijackThis and post a fresh log please. Hopefully that will get a great deal of what is going on with that computer. There will still be more that will need to be removed with HJT.

Lastly, HEY MODS - move us to the HJT forum please. ;)

Ok, I got as far as downloading AdAware software, setting up the scanning as listed in the tutorial, and performing a full system scan. After I quarantined the files in the log (there was 451 critical items!!), my web browser immediately shut down - which was unprompted by me. I got a little nervous so I tried to re-open the browser and read the tutorial again before I deleted the items. That's where I ran into trouble. My browser would not open. It started to open my homepage but got hung up (100% computer usage according to my task manager). I could see the process svchost.exe was using up everything I had. I ended task on the manager screen and tried a few more applications (such as Word). Although I got them to open, it took an extremely long time to do so. Then I tried explorer again. Same result. Finally I tried rebooting and only got to the "Windows is shutting down" screen when the computer hung up again. I ended up doing a hard boot. I tried my browser one more time (same resulty) then immediately opened AdAware and restored everything I quarantined. Tried explorer again and things seem okay. So there must be something that I quarantined that my computer was looking for. Now I am back to square one!! I saved the log adaware created into the Word program before I originally quarantined everything. But it's 101 pages long and I fear way too long to post here. I've tried attaching it below but got an error message that I cannot upload that type of file. Now I'm stuck. Is it possible AdAware identified something my computer needs?

What Adaware was doing was killing a file that is hijacking your browser. You really want to scan with your browser closed. Please print out the instructions and try it again in safe mode. If that does not work, just post a new HijackThis log and we will go after it manually.

I thought that maybe I should try it with the browser closed so I scanned again with AdAware this morning with my browser closed with much better results. No problems getting online afterwards. I put all the items AdAware found in quarantine - just in case I had problems. Then I rebooted in Safe Mode and ran AdAware again - which again found tons of items. I quarantined again and did the cleanmgr task as directed. Here's the log from HJT that I just ran after quarantining twice.

Still seems like an awful lot of stuff. Can I delete my quarantined filesin AdAware now?? Will that make a difference?

Thanks for all your help.

Well, I went ahead and ran AdAware again, right after I last posted. And it found 490 critical items - again. It seems that everytime I get online or reboot all the files show up again. I went ahead and deleted them this time, and AdAware told me it couldn't delete one file (C:\DOCUME~1\LORI\LOCALS~1\TMEP\tmp4.tmp) and it would try to delet on reboot. I checked my temp file again and sure enough there was the file. I deleted everything I could in the temp folder but the tmp4.tmp wouldn't budge along with those four weird files (me_8YsrKvo5pEtH5dT for example). But it didn't seem to help. I keep getting constant pop-ups. And I'm sure if I run AdAware i'll have a ton of critical items again. Arggggghhhh! Maybe I should just dump the whole hard drive and start from scratch. I hoped it was a last resort.

Hey, looking better. Let's worry about deleting those files in adaware a little later.

Make sure you are able to see hidden files and folders http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Boot into safe mode again and scan with HijackThis. Put checks next the the following entries, make sure you have no browser windows open and then click "Fix Checked":

Reboot and scan with this Online scanner http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

That should get a virus or two. Reboot after the virus scan and then scan again with HijackThis and post a fresh log please.

Ok ~ I ran HJT in safe mode and 'fixed' all the entried that I could find from your list. However, there were a few that weren't there.

Then I looked for the listed files to delete. I found C:\WINDOWS\svrrun.exe but I was denied acess to delete it. I was able to delete SStb.exe. And the rest on the list weren't there, including tne prgram file My Web Search.

After I rebooted I ran the online scanner and it found 9 "non-cleanable" infected files, one of which was the svrrun.exe file. So I deleted from there.

Then I just ran HJT again. And at least two of the files I was supposed to look for before (that weren't there) are now there. The scheduler.exe file and the mywebsearch file.

Here's the log:

Not to worry, you are doing a great job. You are almost done.

Ok, we have most if not all the badguys not showing in your log.

Let's get you updated now. You are about 2 years behind on your security patches for Windows XP. Please go to WindowsUpdates with Internet Explorer http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and download all the Critical Security Patches/Updates. You may need to do this several times with reboots between visits to get them all.

After you have done that and you no longer have any critical updates to download, reboot again and post a fresh log please. That should tell us if we got everything and let us know if the security patches took.

Any way I can NOT install Service Pack 2?? I downloaded and installed two small updates from Microsoft. The only other one they say I need is SP2. I'm really apprehensive to use it because of all the awful things I've heard and read about it. I've been told it's a real nightmare. Any thoughts on SP2?

I downloaded and installed a product called WinPatrol. It's supposed to check what programs are starting up on boot and allow you to disable them. I disabled the PowerScheduler.exe file but I think there is still something on my computer which just keeps reinstalling the files I'm trying to get rid of.

After virus scanning, and AdAware scanning again, here's the latest HJT log:
(Looks like there are some repeat customers in here - bargains.exe, websearch, etc. I just can't get rid of them for good)

Ok ~ Here's the latest.

Things seem to be running better. But my Windows Media Player is acting up. And when I scan using the "housecall" site it finds WinTools.exe files everytime. My own Norton Virus scanner finds bargainbuddy.exe files and is unable to delete them.

The HJT log as of 1/6/05

Uh oh, I think I may have bigger problems.

I posted this problem on the XP discussion board tonight:

While trying to install a program for my daughter, I got the error message:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

There is a 'close' button and an 'ignore' button. But no matter which you choose the application ends.

I went to Microsoft's website support and searched the problem. It tells me that that message means I have a missing or corrupt file (it listed 3 possibilites) and gave me direction on how to fix it. I'm supposed to put my 'cd' into my cd drive. The only cd I have that they could be talking about is the XP cd which came with my computer. I put it in and followed the directions given:

START, RUN <cmd>

expand d:\i386\autoexec.nt c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

BUT, I get an error message saying it cannot open the output file.

How can I fix these files??

That doesn't sound like very much fun....

Ok, first of all, when you ran HJT, do you know what version that you were running, and did you have it in it's own directory? Or were you just running it from the zip file?

HJT makes backups, and if you didn't run it from a zip file, it may be possible to recover the deleted files.

Open HJT, click on config (lower right), and then click on backups (top right). When you do that, hopefully a list of files will be there. By highlighting each line, and then clicking restore, it will reverse any changes that you made. Once you get those restored, then post up your log in the HJT forum and let one of our experts take a look at it for you.

I'm afraid if I restore all the back-up files that I'll be back at square one. Do you think what I 'fixed' in HJT could have done this? Should I restore all the files, or are there certain one I should look for?

I'm going to pop in here for a moment....I didn't know you were being helped here when I originally answered your other post. I thought you had been tinkering with HJT on your own. (In other words, I completely misunderstood your post) :flowers:

Ignore what I told you, ColdinCbus will be able to help you.....

Sorry about that.
