Thanks phawgg for your prompt reply to my request for help Dec 20th.
Since then I have run Hijackths, log of results above. This was carried out following runnig the latest issues of Spybot, Ad-Awere CWShredder and AVG anti-virus . Following the run of HijackThis some fixes were were carried out these were as follows :-

"After downloading ACG Free and cleaning various 'stuff' away the remaining problems were -
1. the Cabinet ied_sm7.cab with the file ied.exe that was executed at startup. This was removed by going into an MSDOS window (its a Win98SE machine) and deleting the C:\ied_sm7.cab and its contents. A re-run with Ad-Aware and AVG cleaned up any fresh infestation.
On rebooting the machine and running the rmbugbear.exe utility Acrobat Reader, Iexporer.exe and Notepade.exe were restored to normal.
2. The final problem was the "Seach Toolbar" that was present in IE6 - although this could be turned off it would re-appear on the next IE6 startup. A search through CasleCop's CLSID list -
http://castlecops.com/CLSID.html for the additional registry key that I found in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar, i.e. {9EAC0102-5E61-2312-BC2D-444C4C4F5552} found that DLL.dll was present in C:\WINDOWS. Again, opening of an MSDOS Prompt window allowed that DLL.dll and DLL.ini files to be deleted."
HijackThis was run a second time , the log of which follows:-

The computer appears to be running normally now but after meeting with some of the surprises I have come across recently , i.e.how little I know about computing, nothing would surprise me.

Thankyou for your help,

Bailey Boy
