Hello,

My girlfriend's computer has been bogging down a lot lately. It is sluggish and there seems to be a severe issue with her desktop.

Whenever you save a file to the desktop, the whole explorer/desktop seems to freeze up as soon as the download is finished. To make matters worse, whenever you try to delete this file from the desktop, the computer freezes up as well. I am unable to remove this file.

Also, when you run a virus scan, the scan hangs up whenever it arrives at the part to scan the items on the desktop. It also frequently freezes up when browsing the net and opening extra windows/links.

I have removed all spyware, run chkdsk over night but the problem persists.

Does anyone have any idea besides a completely reinstall of Windows XP?

Thanks a lot.

How many files have been downloaded and left on the Desktop? I always create a Downloads folder in My Documents to store and scan the files before opening. The computer may be bogged down due to excessive files and shortcuts on the Desktop. Use Safe Mode to clean it up.

Try checking the Processes tab of Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) to see what hogs the resources when this happens.

What did you do to remove the spyware/viruses from the system? It's probably a good idea to double check with this free, online utility: http://safety.live.com/ (if it doesn't freeze on you)

Hey guys,

thanks for the responses, keep them coming.

Basically I have run AdAware,Spybot Search & Destroy to remove anything unneeded.

The desktop is pretty much empty. There is only one download on it, the one I can't remove. Besides that it it only the usual links.

Unfortunately I can't bring up the task manager once I encounter these weird freezes. The only way to get normal control back of the computer is to reboot it by a hard reset. Often the frozen window will just stay in the background, not responding, but the other windows still work. I am still able to browse the internet, even though one IE window might be not responding. However, if I click on it, it usually all freezes up.

Hope this makes sense somewhat =)

Try opening the Task Manager and clicking on the Processes tab. Then, while Task Manager is still running, try to force a freeze by downloading an item to the desktop (with the Task Manager still in the foreground).

Also, try checking your Event Viewer for problems (go to Start...Run...and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Click once on each of the categories in the left hand pane and look in the right hand pane for errors. Let us know the "Properties" of the most common/most recent error(s). What we're trying to do here is to find an error that corresponds to the freezing - and we presume that the error will occur just before the system freezes.

Boot into Safe Mode and either delete the file downloaded to the desktop or move it to My Documents. While in Safe mode open My Computer and right click the hard drive and select Properties. Under the Tool tab click the Check Now button. Under Check disk options check the box for Automatically fix file system errors then click the Start button. You will get a warning that it can't be run without restarting. Click Yes and reboot the computer. Let the disk check run until completion. Once it is finished and you are back to the desktop reboot into Safe mode again and run Disk Cleanup then defrag the hard drive.

Thanks guys.

I will try those suggestions when I have access to the computer again, probably not until Wednesday.

I will report back with the results.

Is the file you can't delete in a folder? The reason I ask is because sometimes Windows won't let me delete a folder until I delete all the files inside it first.

I noted you said you use AdAware and Spybot. Do you have any antivirus software and a firewall? Could be a virus infection.

I would say infection or a file coruption issue. Maybe the file has become corupt by being saved onto a bad sector of the hard disk. Try first the safe mode option. I personally would be tempted to create a new profile and see if that has the same issues. If that is OK then swap data from one profile to the other. Then delete the profile. Alot quicker than a re-Install.
