My Windows XP Pro, a HP Pavilion with a NVidia graphics card and AC97 sound slows when connected to our local network and unfeezes if unhooked.

I use process explorer and TDImon and discovered that
process calls of

are continuous almost every 10 seconds as long as connected to network

these are not making connections at all outside of the computer itself

rather they seem to be cuased by the computer having access to a live network connection and not the internet.

CPU usage is 89% or greater with NO applications running if connected to net.

A google for IRP_MJ_DEVICE_CONTROL shows only 2 results.

So, the suspicion is that this is bad. I'd suggest running a free, online scan here to ensure you that your system is malware free (it'll also clean your registry and temp files - and will defrag your hard drive): http://safety.live.com
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
