Windows Could Not Start Because The Following File...

HElp friends puter is down with this message on startup "windows could not start because the following file was missing or corrupt / windows/system32/config/system. What happened? Any clues? Can he use my recovery disk or are they registered to each user?

Have you tried starting using the Last Known Good Configuration from the Safe Mode boot menu?

Usually this means that the registry has become corrupted. You may be able to use your CD to load the Recovery Console.

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

He reloaded from cd. lost alot of data though. thanks for your help
