Posted 27 December 2004 - 10:11 PM

I ususally keep my computer extremely adware and spyware free, but somehow, over the course of 30 seconds, by some sick stroke of luck, dozens of adware/spyware programs found their way onto my computer. Now, I'm left to clean up the mess.

Could someone please take a look at my HJT log and indicate what exactly I should be cleaning out?

Thanks!

Hi

First of all remove the Peper Trojan.
1. Download and save PeperFix.
REBOOT in SafeMode: Starting your computer in Safe mode, use the F8 method,
and run the program.
It will remove the files, leaving one orphaned entry to be cleaned up with Hijack this.

2. REBOOT again into SafeMode and run it again for good measure.

3. REBOOT normally.

Download Ad-aware SE 1.05: here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.
Using Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware & Hijackers from Your Computer

Download System Security Suite here:
System Security Suite Download & Tutorial. Unzip it to your desktop.
Install the program. Don't use it yet.

Download, install and UPDATE SpyBot Search & Destroy.
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware from Your Computer

Download, install and update Spyware Blaster.
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware, Hijackers, and Malware

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run AdAware, press the "Start" button, uncheck "Scan for negligible risk entries", select "Perform full system scan" and press "Next". Let AdAware remove anything it finds.

Run SpyBot Search & Destroy and remove anything it finds.

With all windows and browsers closed.
Clean out temporary and Temporary Internet Files.
A. Open System Security Suite.
B. In the Items to Clear tab thick:
- Internet Explorer (left pane): Cookies & Temporary files
- My Computer (right pane): Temporary files & Recycle Bin
Press the Clear Selected Items button.
Close the program.

REBOOT normally.

Run HijackThis! again and post a new log please.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Hi

Download System Security Suite here:
System Security Suite Download & Tutorial. Unzip it to your desktop.
Install the program. Don't use it yet.

Please print or copy these instructions because you are not able to access the Internet in SafeMode.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

okay, so, I did everything that you requested I do... A few files/folders that you indicated I should delete were not where they were said to be. No clue as to whether or not they even exist.

The computer runs quite a bit faster- and about twenty of those malicious programs are no longer running. Although, I have noticed that a few still remain.

The file you requested me to post,

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?gonui.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

was not there. I couldn't find a l!gouni.exe folder or file anywhere in the system 32 directory. Could it be somewhere else? Or am I looking for the wrong thing?

Here is my new HJT log.
Thanks!!

A few files/folders that you indicated I should delete were not where they were said to be. No clue as to whether or not they even exist.

Most probably if you run Ad-Aware & Spybot Search and Destrot they were deleted.

The computer runs quite a bit faster- and about twenty of those malicious programs are no longer running.

That's good news

Although, I have noticed that a few still remain.

Yes.

The file you requested me to post, was not there.

I'm not sure you understood what to do.

I couldn't find a l!gouni.exe folder or file anywhere in the system 32 directory.

I didn't told you to look for a file with this filename. The script will look for the malicios file. This file is very tricky and has the same filename as a legitimate windows file.

Or am I looking for the wrong thing?

Wait please for my instructions.

I gave you the content of a script. Save this content as FindFile.bat and run it. It will open notepad with some data about a malicious file on your HDD. I will use these data to tell you how to delete this tricky file. Please read and follow carefully the instructions below:

Open Notepad. Copy and paste the contents of the following quotebox into Notepad:

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?gonui.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.

Do you know what this file is ? I found no information about it:
FuncKey.DLL <--- this file

You are running an outdated version of HijackThis.. Delete the copy you have and download the latest version of HijackThis!: Download here HJT 1.99.. Save it on your Desktop. You will need now to unzip hijackthis.exe to a permanent folder, such as c:\hjt . This has to be done as HijackThis creates backups. You may need to use these backups.

First create a new folder:
A. Click My Computer icon on your desktop
B. Click C: drive
C. Click the File menu --> New --> Folder, a folder "New folder" will be created.
D. Rename it HJT

Unzip hijackthis.exe to the c:\HJT folder.

Please post a new hijackthis log.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?

Okay, I'm sorry, I misunderstood what to do with that script. Here is the text produced by the aformentioned script:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 84D5-C85A

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\system32

08/04/2004 02:56 AM 514,560 logonui.exe

OK,

One question:

Do you know what this file is ? I found no information about it:
FuncKey.DLL <--- this file
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

O2 - BHO: NLS UrlCatcher Class - {AEECBFDA-12FA-4881-BDCE-8C3E1CE4B344} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvms.dll
O2 - BHO: CB UrlCatcher Class - {CE188402-6EE7-4022-8868-AB25173A3E14} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscb.dll
O2 - BHO: ADP UrlCatcher Class - {F4E04583-354E-4076-BE7D-ED6A80FD66DA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msbe.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atwtusb] RUNDLL32 FuncKey.DLL,ExtFuncCall AA

O8 - Extra context menu item: LimeShop Preferences - file://C:\Program Files\LimeShop\System\Temp\limeshop_script0.htm

O23 - Service: ZESOFT - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Search for these files and delete them if found:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvms.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscb.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msbe.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe <-- this file
FuncKey.DLL <-- this file

Delete these folders:
C:\Program Files\LimeShop\ <-- this folder
C:\Program Files\NaviSearch\ <-- this folder
C:\Program Files\CashBack\ <-- this folder
C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network\ <-- this folder

Empty the recycle bin.

REBOOT normally.

You will find two files with the same name in the C:\WINNT\System32\ folder: logonui.exe. One is bad and one is legitimate. You must delete the bad file.
Right click on each file and select Properties.
In the General tab the legitimate file has this Description: Windows Logon UI, Size = 502 KB bytes Do not delete this file, it is a Microsoft file.

The bad file has this size = 389,120 bytes, and the description is unknown.
The bad file will not appear alphabetically.

If only the legitimate file is visible:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Click File menu -> Save and name the file as unhide.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
Save this file on the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"SearchSystemDirs"=dword:00000001
"SearchHidden"=dword:00000001
"IncludeSubFolders"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001

Double-click on the unhide.reg file you saved on your desktop, and when it prompts to merge say Yes.

REBOOT your machine.

Look for the bad file and delete it.

REBOOT and post a new hijackthis log please.

Okay... I did everything you told me to do.
Although, when I went to delete the files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvms.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscb.dll <-- this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msbe.dll <-- this file

None of them could be found... (I made sure that all of the hidden files were showing)

I did, however, delete all of the other files that you indicated I should delete, as well as the folders.

As far as the logonui.exe file, that as well could not be found, even by creating that registry file and merging it into the windows registry. ...rebooting, and everything. Still couldn't be found in the SYSTEM 32 folder.

As for the new HJT log?

None of them could be found... (I made sure that all of the hidden files were showing)

HijackThis deleted the files.

As far as the logonui.exe file, that as well could not be found, even by creating that registry file and merging it into the windows registry. ...rebooting, and everything. Still couldn't be found in the SYSTEM 32 folder.

Run again the FindFile.bat and post the log please.

According to the FindFile.bat, it's still there. It produced the following:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 84D5-C85A

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\system32

08/04/2004 02:56 AM 514,560 logonui.exe
12/22/2004 02:21 PM 389,120 l?gonui.exe
2 File(s) 903,680 bytes

Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Heather\Desktop

Perhaps I should also include that there are a couple of other files with similar names... There's the 502KB logonui.exe, there's a 4KB logonui.exe.manifest files, and a 1.45MB logonuiX.exe file...

Perhaps one of those are the malicious file?

Search for it - search for l?gonui.exe. The icon is blue colored, with three letters "FMC", and the file has this size: 389,120 bytes.

I found it by searching, and sucessfully deleted it. ...Emptied the recycle bin, the file is gone.

As you said, it had a blue icon with the letters FMC, and was approximatley 380KB.

Now that the malicious file is gone, is there anything else I should do?

Thanks!
