Hi, this virus has taken me over. When I go online, my homepage does not come up, instead it takes me to youriesecure.com. And there is a pop-up telling me what to buy to fix it. I can ex out the pop-up and I can navigate to other sites. But my computer is getting slower and slower.
I read on your site that I should download Ad-aware, and I tried to do this, but when it started to download, the virus would pop up a page saying that this page is unaccessible.
Very frustrating.
I did download Hijack this and I have a log. Also, I was able to get Combofix. So, I have two logs, but now I don't know what to do with them.
I could really use some help.
Thanks, Iman

Hello,

* Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Don't use it yet.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\winxp\system32\blank.htm
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {192c5b4a-3efd-40c7-9f99-c472deb8efc0} - C:\Program Files\Super Codec\isaddon.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Protection Bar - {96ebbe6a-2864-4345-b32b-26ee9be524b5} - C:\Program Files\Super Codec\iesplugin.dll

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

(Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background and set it blank again. But you can reapply your desktop background again afterwards

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process.

Post the log from smitfraudfix in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

I press F8 to go into safe mode, and it still boots up. Is there another way to get into safe mode?

Thank you, I was able to get to safe mode and run hijackthis and eliminate the three files you recommended.
When I got to Smitfraud and clicked on Smitfraud.cmd, I got a DOS window that said "process.exe file missing" and then "unzip all the archive in a folder" then, "press any key to continue" and when I did that it took me back to the previous window.
So, I wasn't able to complete the rest of the instructions.
It did get rid of "youriesecure.com" and the popup window when I got online. I now go to my normal homepage. However, computer is still running slowly.
Any suggestions?

That's because you didn't unzip smitfraudfix.zip.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html

So try it again, and post the logs I asked.

The reason why your system runs slowly is mostly because of the extra security tools you have/had installed.
You may only have 1 antivirus and 1 firewall installed. As I see from your log, you have/had Panda, Symantec, Sana Security, PCSecurityShield..

So what we can do here afterwards is uninstall ALL of them - since you had more installed at once and may have corrupted eachother, and make sure they are properly uninstalled, no leftovers anymore - and then install only 1 antivirus and firewall.
But we'll look into that afterwards. Let's deal with malware first and then we'll deal with the rest.

This is looking good again.

Now let's deal with your security programs and uninstall them and make sure they are properly uninstalled + leftovers gone. Then we'll reinstall the one that you would like to keep.

I also see a leftover from spysweeper present - this is also an old version of spysweeper.
A question first - did you purchase your PCSecurityShield, or is it a trial you are using? Reason I am asking is, in case you are using a trial and you're not planning to purchase it - it's better that we replace it with a free antivirus and firewall. Let me know this in your next reply.
Also perform next..

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hello,

Let's uninstall PC Security Shield and then reinstall it afterwards, because it also looks like you have 2 versions installed.

I can't find any references to Panda, Sana Security and Symantec/Norton in your uninstall list anymore, but they are properly uninstalled previously, because leftovers are still present in your Hijackthislog.

So start with uninstalling The Shield 2006 Professional and The Shield AntiVirus 2006. (I assume you are still having the installer for The Shield 2006 pro, because that's the one we are going to reinstall afterwards)

Reboot afterwards!! Important!!

Also uninstall Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06, because this is an old and vulnerable version.

For your Norton, read next and use the Norton Removal tool to deal with the leftovers:

To fully remove Norton AntiVirus, you should go here and download the files and print the instructions for removal, and follow them:
How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005/2006 (note: this removes ALL Norton 2004/2005/2006 products from your computer, and also uninstalls Norton Ghost 10.0/9.0/2003)
How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2003 or Norton AntiVirus 2003 Professional Edition
How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2000/2001/2002

Also read this article in case you're having problems with uninstalling Norton if above instructions didn't work, or noticed problems after uninstalling Norton:
http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm

For Panda.. Follow next steps:

Please completely uninstall all Panda Software files from your computer by accessing the link below. This will guide you through a complete, manual uninstall of this software:

http://216.240.153.30/tech/Panda_Uninst.exe

The screenshot instructions for this process are listed below:

1. Choose to 'run' the file:

2. Choose to 'continue to uninstall Panda Software as prompted:

3. A DOS screen will pop up and prompt you that it is 'removing LSP's':

4. You will receive the screen below prompting you to restart/reboot your computer. Please click 'OK':

Once you've done the above, please make sure you REBOOT afterwards!!

Then post a new Hijackthislog after reboot so we can see what's still leftover, so we can delete it.

Once we're done with that, you can reinstall your The Shield 2006 pro again.

By the way -- I'll have to leave within 30 mins - going to work -- so after performing above and I am already gone, reinstall your "The Shield 2006 pro" already, because I can't leave you without any protection.
Then I'll reply later after I see the new Hijackthislog and get rid of any leftovers of Panda, Sana and Norton/symantec if still present in your log.

That is much better!

I see PCSecurityShield > Firewall is still present, but that's ok.

Check and fix this older version of Spysweeper which isn't present anymore in Hijackthis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpySweeper] "C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe" /0

Also check and fix this entry in Hijackthis - this is the reminder that pops up after reboot that you have been using Msconfig previously (you used it for getting into safe mode):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

Then you won't get that reminder anymore.

Then reinstall the Antivirus version you purchased and let me know afterwards how things are.
