Hello and welcome to TSF.

You might like to print these so that you can have access to them while you are in Safe Mode later.

Disable the Script Blocking In Norton Settings:
Start Norton Antivirus.
Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton Antivirus. The Norton Antivirus Options dialog box appears.
Click Script Blocking.
Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
Click OK
You can reenable it afterwards when everything is clean again.

======================================

Download and unzip BFUzip from HERE.

Run the program and click the Web button as shown here:

Posted Image

Use this URL to copy into the address bar of the Download script window:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu

Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.

If you have any questions about the use of BFU please read here:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/BFUinstructions.html

====================================

Please download the latest version of Ad-Aware SE from HERE (if you already have Ad-Aware installed, make sure that it is the latest version 1.0.6. If it's NOT the version 1.0.6, can you then uninstall your current version/delete folder: C:\Program Files\Lavasoft & empty recycle bin. Finally install the latest version.)

Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon, Click "connect", Click "OK", Click "Finish".)

IF you are having problems with the updating, get the manual updates here; http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net/public/defs.zip

Download Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in HERE
Install the VX2 Cleaner

====================================

Boot into Safe Mode

=====================================

Close all browsers (incuding this one)/windows/applications. Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

O2 - BHO: Class - {E8182C14-A3D5-AD4A-F16D-53ACBF353DA9} - C:\WINDOWS\SGBDQ1.DLL
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [outlook] \outlook\outlook.exe /auto
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://ka.bar.need2find.com/KA/menusearch.html?p=KA
O16 - DPF: {15651C7C-E812-44A2-A9AC-B467A2233E7D} - http://www.123mania.com/GIDCAI32.cab

Click on "fix checked"

Exit HijackThis but stay in Safe Mode.

=====================================
  • Start Ad-Aware SE
  • Go to "Plug-ins"
  • Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click "Run Tool" (Before running the VX2 Cleaner, make sure other anti-virus or anti-spyware applications are closed.)
  • Click "OK" when asked if you want to execute this tool.
  • If your computer isn't infected, click "Close".
If your computer is infected;
  • Select "Clean"
  • Reboot your system.
=========================================

Scan your computer with Ad-Aware:

Set up the Configurations as follows:
  • Start Ad-Aware SE
  • Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
  • Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
  • Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
  • Click on "Proceed"
  • Click on "Scan Now"
  • Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Select "Search for low-risk threats"
  • Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
  • When the scan has completed, select Next.
  • In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
  • Check the box next to every "target family" for removal.
  • Click "Next", Click "OK".
Reboot your computer again.

Run a second scan (With Ad-aware & VX2 Cleaner) to make sure the files have been removed from your computer

=======================================

Download and update:

Spybot S & D

Remember to "immunize" after updating so that the latest definitions can be enabled.

a. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
b. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
c. Click the button to 'Search for Updates' then download and install the Updates.
d. Next click the button 'Check for Problems'
e. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries, BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window.
f. Make sure that there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
g. Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

If it has trouble removing any spyware, you will get a message window, asking if it would be ok to run Spybot - S&D on the next reboot before any other applications start running. You should reply Yes to this. The next time you start Windows, Spybot will run automatically and fix any of the programs it could not fix previously.

At this point you will be presented with the list of found entries again, but now there will be large green checkmarks next to the items that Spybot - S&D was able to remove. The ones that are still checked but do not have the large green checkmark next to them will be fixed on the next reboot of windows.

h. REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.

=======================================

Post a fresh HiJackThis log once done. :thumbsup:

Looks good from my end except this entry which was not in the previous log. Do you know anything about it? How is the computer running now?

O4 - Startup: STK014 PNP Monitor.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SRW.EXE

hi amateur!

thanx so much, working like a charm!

ive had a look at my old log and

O4 - Startup: STK014 PNP Monitor.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SRW.EXE

was in the previous log aswell. ive checked the "SRW.exe" file and its the System Recovery Wizard for
Windows....

it may possibly be linked to the grey box i get everytime i switch on my PC, that says

"this wizard automatically runs during the windows system recovery process"

and just gives me the option to say ok.

is this anything i shud be worried about?? is there a way of turning it off?? and what does it mean... (im guessing theres a problem with my pc that triggers the recovery wizard???)

thanks again

Here is a quote from

Microsoft Windows 98 README for
System Recovery
March 1998

RESTORING YOUR SYSTEM BY USING SYSTEM RECOVERY
==============================================

The System Recovery program restores your Windows 98
system by using the full backup that you created with
Microsoft Backup. To use System Recovery to restore
your system, you must have:

- Your Windows 98 CD-ROM

- A backup device connected to your computer

- A full system backup created with Microsoft Backup

>>>To restore Windows 98 on your computer:

1. Insert your Windows Startup Disk into your floppy disk drive,
and then start your computer.

2. On the Boot menu, choose Start your computer with
CD-ROM support.

3. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type

n:
(where N is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive)

and then press ENTER.

4. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type

CD tools\sysrec

and then press ENTER.

5. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type

pcrestor

and then press ENTER.

6. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

This reinstalls Windows 98 on your computer. When Setup is
complete, the System Recovery wizard starts.

>>>To use the System Recovery wizard to restore your files:

1. In the System Recovery wizard, click Next.

2. Type your name and company, and then click Next.

3. Click Details.

4. In the Help window, read the entire Backup Help topic.
This explains the entire recovery process.

5. When you have finished reading the Help topic, click the
Close button.

6. In the System Recovery wizard, click Finish.
The Microsoft Backup Welcome screen appears.

IMPORTANT: If you click Cancel, click Yes, and then restart
your system. The System Recovery wizard automatically starts.

7. In the Microsoft Backup dialog box, click Restore backed
up files.

8. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

IMPORTANT: You should restore hardware settings ONLY
if your hardware is the same as when you made the backup.

The entire backup of the registry is restored, as are
all selected local drives.

-OR-

If you do not click Restore hardware and system settings
to the registry but continue with the operation, your
software settings and configuration will be restored along
with all selected local drives.

Restore all your new and changed files (incremental)
backups. Begin with the oldest and progress to the most
recent incremental backup.

I think the bolded sentence in the quote explains what has happened. Go ahead and do the following so that it will not remind you each time you turn the computer on.

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entry:

O4 - Startup: STK014 PNP Monitor.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SRW.EXE

Close all browsers/windows/applications, except HijackThis and click on "fix checked".

hi! thanx for reopening the topic

my comp recently crashed and i think ive contracted a few trojans, ive run spybot and ad-aware and cleared out the spyware but when i ran nortons it didnt pick up anything.

in the running programs list (ctrl+Alt+delete) i found a new software running "mstds" im not sure what that is... some websites say its a malicious virus some say its a military kinda thing :flowers: :thumbsup:

Also i have a problem accessing one particular website "www.hi5.com" im not sure if its the websites server but most ppl ive asked can access that website. so i believe its jus me. it tries to load up the page but fails and shows the "cannot find server or DNS Error" page. and asks me if i would like windows to detect network settings...but that doesnt work.
would this be due to a virus??? or script?

heres my new log:

Hi,

You are infected again..... two different infections......I would like to remind you that Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows 98, which means that it's not being updated anymore. You need to be extra careful about your surfing habits and install adequate security tools which were mentioned in the links given in my last post. It has only been a short while and you've been infected again. We cannot continue to clean each time you are infected at this rate.

Run HiJackThis;

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"
3. click on (highlight) the following;

c:\windows\system\mstds.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only that item above is highlighted, then click "Kill process". Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Now, back at the main screen of HijackThis, click on Scan and put a check in front of the following

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mstds.exe] c:\windows\system\mstds.exe

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click on "fix checked". Exit HijackThis

======================

" Open My Computer.
" Select the View
" Select the Folder Options option.
" Select the View tab. option.
" Select the Advance Advanced settings box option.
" Select the Hidden files folder.
" Select the Show all files option
" Click Apply to confirm.
" Click OK.

======================

Using Windows Explorer, locate and delete the following file:

c:\windows\system\mstds.exe

If you cannot delete it, try it in Safe Mode.

======================

Download Lspfix to your desktop. Then, Extract(unzip) it to its own folder. Disconnect from the internet, and close all browser windows. Run LSPFix. Click the "I know what I'm doing" button. In the left hand pane, highlite all instances of mswsck32.dll (and nothing else), move it to the "Remove" pane and by clicking the >> button. Click Finish. Reboot to complete the process.

======================

Run Spybot and Adaware again.

======================

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log please.

Happy Holidays! :thumbsup:
