Somehow some malware got installed on my PC claiming that I had a virus and the only way to remove it would be to buy their virus-removal software. Death first! I found some software that seemingly removed this malware but probably not completely. From time to time various threads such as Norton AntiVirus, Outlook or Google updater will result in a system popup being displayed saying that file notoskrnl.dll is not a valid Windows image. This file, which I understand should not even be on a Windows XP system, is 0 bytes long. I am afraid to delete this file not knowing whether I will be able to reboot again. I rebooted in safe mode to run hijackthis but I no longer got the popups. The following is a hijackthis log run in normal mode. Any help appreciated:

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :thumbsup:

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

I actually downloaded ComboFix to c:\Download rather than the desktop. Let me know if that makes a difference:

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntoskrnl.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntsystem.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

    If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

  • After rebooting, open up Killbox again. Click File -> Logs -> Actions History Log
  • Post this log in your next reply.
=============

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log.

Thanks for your reply. Pardon my asking a question before I take your recommended action (I am being asked to take certain things on faith). I would be interested in what your analysis was that leads you to want me to take your recommended actions.

Also, I saw something is the ComboFix log that looks suspicious:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
"SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll, zwebauth.dll, ntoskrnl.dll"

Is the ntoskrnl.dll entry bogus? Thanks in advance.

Take a look at this link to get more info on the infection that you have.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusin...s.aspx?id=58686

And yes, that line in your Combofix log indicates the infected file that needs to be deleted with Killbox.

Although I tried to paste both file names into Killbox, the dropdown only showed the one file below. File C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntsystem.exe does not exist anyway.

I tried to run smitfraudfix.cmd as requested but Norton Anti-Virus said a malicious script was detected:
C:\Documents and Settings\Ronald Aaronson\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\GetPaths.vbs.

I allowed Norton to halt the script. Thewn the dos box displayed:

joedanger is NOT involved with Smitfraudfix in any way!
This tool was created by S!Ri, and is available for FREE.
etc.

So I closed the dos box without proceeding.

That's a false positive from Norton. You should allow the script to run.

My system seems to be running fine, i.e. I do not get the popups anymore. May I remove the ntoskrnl.dll entry from [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]?

The HijackThis log shows an entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Mstask32driver] Mstask32.exe

And in the registry there is:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Mstask32driver = Mstask32.exe

This seems like malware. I could not find an actual instance of Mstask32.exe on my machine so perhaps one of my malware scans deleted this module without cleaning up the registry. Should I clean this up?
