Hello All

Just dropping by for a check up on my system. I recently installed software for a Wi-Fi adapter called WiFiMAX to enable Wi-Fi connection (obviously), along with Apache web server (it came with the software). Plus even though i use Firefox, Ive just installed IE7 (and what a load of crap that still is,i preferred 6). And, i thought all was fine, but recently i've just received a porno pop up??? NO, ive not been peeking either, those sites and free music download sites i dont bother with, the leaders in screwing up your PC with malware.
Im a regular on the forums and im very knowledgeable on safety (im kitted out with protection), but im a little stumped on this one now, because i cant see that downloading IE did this, nor the Wi-Fi software. The only thing i can think of is a site that appeared to be safe (even to McAfee site-Advisor) wasnt, and it automatically and without asking downloaded something upon visit that was not related to the original site.

Just for reference, im running F-Secure AV (Excellent AV software, which makes me all the more surprised on this issue in it not picking it up) ewido, Spyware Blaster,Spybot S&D and Windows Defender. All of which are updated on a regular basis.

Ive supplied below my HJT log, and a scan from Panda on-line.

Any advice would be great and if you notice any cack that needs removing, i would be greatly thankful

Hi,

Panda seems to have found something. Your log is showing several versions of Java installed.

• You have an outdated version of Java which, because of security reasons, needs to be updated. To update Java:
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10 and save it to your Desktop.
- Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
- The page will refresh.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
- Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the Posted Image icon next to it.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed - Important!
- Then from your Desktop, double-click on the downloaded Java file to install the newest version.

• Download QooFix and save it to your Desktop.
- Right-click onto the Qoolfix.zip
- Select Extract All
- Click Next
- Where it says "Files will be extracted to this directory" - type C:\Qoofix
- Click Next -> Finish
- Navigate to C:\Qoofix -> double-click onto qoofix.exe
- Select Begin Removal
- A reboot may be necessary if an infection is found.
- The logfile is automatically saved to the same location as Qoofix.

• Post back with the contents of the Qoofix log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi waterfalls, thanks for getting back to me on this.

I installed the new Java, however, it was actually update number '6', so i guess 5.10 is now also an old version.

The Qoofix scan did not find anything, although it did change a couple of registry entries which spybot informed me of and i allowed.

Here is my new HJT log, what next my friend?

Hi,

You will need to print these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

Uninstall the following programs if present
- Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
- Select the following, one at a time, and click Remove for each one
Oin
Yazzle by Oin
Purityscan by Oin
Snowballwars by Oin
Cowabanga by OIN
or anything similar with Oin in it

If OIN not listed, download and run this uninstaller
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

Reboot when done! Really important!

Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Navigate to and delete the following folder if present:
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris Organ\My Documents\??crosoft <- this folder will look like Microsoft

Reboot your computer into Normal Mode.

Run Panda Online scan again and post the results along with a new HijackThis log. Also, I'd like to see the QooFix log.

Note: The file contained in the folder I had you delete is a backdoor trojan which steals passwords, Internet banking and personal data. I strongly suggest that you change your passwords as soon as possible.
See, How to report ID theft, fraud, drive-by installs, hijacking and malware?.

Hi waterfalls, sorry for the delay, been tied down with work.

Right, i did as you said and looked for anything relating to OIN, nothing was found to remove. So, i downloaded the Uninstaller and ran it. Just before the uninstaller ran, windows defender popped up telling me not to allow it and quoted that it was critical, i thought because of its name. So, i still ran the uninstaller. Ever since then, i keep getting a pop up everytime i open any page or link on the internet, one just now infact. It tells me that it is trying to connect to tiscali (the pay as you go firm i was using in the days of dial up) saying that it is opening a port but there is an error, it reads 'Error 680: There is no dial tone.

Infact it pops up whenever it wants to, even when not connected to the internet.

Also i looked for the folder you said to, the only one in there is actually called 'Microsoft', regardless of name, should this be there? When i open it it has a file called winlogon.exe that is distorted, there is no icon, just the text.Is it the folder to delete? Also, just noticed something interesting. Using Winzip to open up Qoofix and it asked me where i wanted to save it. Funnily, the ??crosoft folder is visable here along with another one called ?asks, but they are not visable when i go to my documents folder, even with hidden files and folders showing??????

Below are the Scan results and HJT logs you asked for, but i dont think there has been any change. Thanks again!

Please download Combofix: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
and save to the desktop.

1. Double click on combo.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it will produce a logfile located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
3. Post the contents of that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause your system to stall/hang.

Post back with the combofix.txt log and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi,

We need to disable your Spybot TeaTimer and your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as they may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

To disable Windows Defender:
* Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
* Click on Tools, General Settings
* Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
* Click Save

To disable Spybot's TeaTimer:
* Run Spybot-S&D
* Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
* On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
* Restart your computer.

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3C060EA2-E6A9-4E49-A530-D4657B8C449A} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll
O2 - BHO: IeCaptureBho Object - {7c1ce531-09e9-4fc5-9803-1c2956615786} - C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopIE.dll (file missing)

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot your computer.

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text inside the codebox into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\sharedtaskscheduler]
"{1B68470C-2DEF-493B-8A4A-8E2D81BE4EA5}"=-

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1B68470C-2DEF-493B-8A4A-8E2D81BE4EA5}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\sharedtaskscheduler]
"{16875E09-927B-4494-82BD-158A1CD46BA0}"=-

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{16875E09-927B-4494-82BD-158A1CD46BA0}]

- Save this as fix.reg -> choose to save as *all files -> and place it on your desktop.
- It should look like this: Posted Image
- Double-click on it and, when you are asked if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click YES/OK.

Reboot your computer.

Post back with a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer is running now.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi Waterfalls, thanks for your reply. I have done as you suggested, and here are the results. I also scanned again with Panda, and its showing the same results.

The pop ups are not appearing every 5 seconds now.

Hi,

Panda is showing that those folders are now quarantined - combofix quarantined them.

You said you're not having popups every 5 seconds, but are they still occurring?

The pop-up has happened just the once since, so do you think it maybe resolved? I have received a pop-up from Fire fox telling me that there is a new update a new update available 2.0.0.1, but it does not support java version 6, which i believe ive just installed!

Im not using my emails at the moment here, or any other site (Ebay,Amazon etc) that uses a password due to the infection.

What needs to be done next my friend?

Thanks again, and Merry Christmas!

Hi,

Happy Holidays to you as well.

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text inside the codebox into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser\{07B18EA9-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser\{0494D0D9-F8E0-41AD-92A3-14154ECE70AC}]

- Save this as fix.reg -> choose to save as *all files -> and place it on your desktop.
- It should look like this: Posted Image
- Double-click on it and, when you are asked if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click YES/OK.

Disable Windows Defender again.

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {56071E0D-C61B-11D3-B41C-00E02927A304} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0007-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_07) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0008-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_08) -

You have three sites in your Trusted Zone. Unless you have a compelling reason to have them there, simply bookmark those websites and place a checkmark next to them as well:
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sony-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sonystyle-europe.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.vaio-link.com

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

Reboot your computer.

Regarding Firefox 2.0.0.1 and Java 1.6, others have received that pop-up but it appears not to be true.
See this recent thread from just a few days ago: Firefox 2.0.0.1 not compatible with Java 6?.

Also, you stated that: "The pop-up has happened just the once since." I am assuming that "the pop-up" is not the one from Firefox, so what exactly was "the pop-up" - that is, what did it say?

Run Panda Scan again and post back with the results and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi waterfalls, done all as you said. The Sony trusted sites are fine being there, the computer is a sony one and has had them all along, so if its no difference i will keep them there if thats ok.

The pop-up i was referring to is the one i was getting in regards to the tiscali dial up pop-up i mentioned a few posts ago. It has not appeared since.

In regards to Firefox, i will update it now.

Here are the new posts, and again thank you very much for your help with this

It's fine if you keep those sites in your Trusted Zone since Sony put them there.

Your log looks clean. Make sure that you change your passwords.

Also, re-enable Windows Defender and Tea-Timer.

If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your anti-spyware scanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.
Also, make sure that your virus-scanner, the one that is already installed on your system, is always up to date!

Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Happy surfing again!
