Hello, I made mistake of loaning my old, overworked, laptop to a co-worker for a week. It was returned with virusburster on it. Don’t know whether to blame him or?? It is used mostly for PLC and touchscreen programming. Norton didn’t prevent the infection.

I’ve ran SmitfraudFix, Ad-Aware, and EVERYTHING (and then some) posted in the “Preparation Guide”. Here’s the HT log. Hoping someone can tell me all is well or ??

Thanks much.

Hello idssteve,

I am SifuMike and I will be helping you.

It was returned with virusburster on it

Where are you seeing virusburster?

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Notes:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Disable script blocking if you have Norton Antivirus installed so it will not interfere with the fix. Trojan Hunter has been reported to detect combofix as Worm.Qiv.100.

Thank you so much, Mike.

It had the popups and etc. I'd followed instructions on another BC thread and ran smitfraudfix in safe mode and, ... so maybe it's gone. Just wanting to be sure. I'll download and run these things and get back ASAP.

BTW, should i be changing passwords and creditcard info? Can this thing get my roboform stuff?

Thanks again.

be back soon...

No, this infection does not look for passwords and creditcard info. Roboform should be Safe too.

Here's combofix log. I forgot to disable Norton's script blocking. Should i disable and re-run? It is set only to ask what to do, and never asked, but... ???

Also, i'd forgotten to quit the smitfraudfix window before running combofix. Should I just re-do??

Thanks again.

Well, I couldn’t find your instructions, but did a BC search and found jotti.

Couldn’t find C:\WINDOWS\system32\swxcacls.exe (where'd it go?!?!?) but did a search and found swxcacls.exe in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve\Desktop\SmitfraudFix

and again in: Desktop SmitfraudFix.

Here's the jotti results for the swxcacls.exe in the SmitfraudFix folder on the desktop.

Hope i did this right...

Thanks

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. Hi steve,

So far, everything looks good.

Let's do one more scan.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune DO NOT run it yet.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (formerly Ewido)
This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept the default installation path: C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. You can select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Sheild' and 'Automatic Updates'. If you choose to do this, then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
7. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
8. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method so Windows will start with minimal drivers and running processes.
To do this restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

1.) Double-click the small BLUE Garbage Can ATF-Cleaner.exe file to run the program.
2.) At the top, under Main choose: Select All
3.) Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use the Firefox browser:
1.) At the top, click Firefox and choose: Select All
2.) Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use the Opera browser:
1.) At the top, click Opera and choose: Select All
2.) Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 as follows:

1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.

Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.

Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).

Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).

Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).

Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".

2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans.
Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

When done, submit the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 log  and a  fresh Hijackthis log.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi Steve,

Your Hijackthis log is clean

Lets clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and
How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again! :flowers:

Hi Steve,

Opps! I have missed one file, so we need to do a quick Jotti scan on it. I apologize for that. I think that FPAPLI.EXE is what works your scroller on your touch pad, but I am not sure.

You will need to configure Windows to show Hidden files.

Go to Jotti Online File Scanner copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\system32\fpapli.exe to the upload and scan it.

Let me know the results.
Copy and paste the output to this thread

It should look something like this sample:

File: GoogleToolbarInstaller.exe
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.)
Packers detected: CEXE

AntiVir No viruses found (0.15 seconds taken)
Avast No viruses found (1.51 seconds taken)
BitDefender No viruses found (0.97 seconds taken)
ClamAV No viruses found (0.39 seconds taken)
Dr.Web No viruses found (0.52 seconds taken)
F-Prot Antivirus No viruses found (0.06 seconds taken)
Kaspersky Anti-Virus No viruses found (0.74 seconds taken)
mks_vir No viruses found (0.21 seconds taken)
NOD32 No viruses found (0.42 seconds taken)
Norman Virus Control No viruses found (0.40 seconds taken)
