Hi,

After upgrading to a nice new core 2 duo processor, i decided to go the whole hog and get 64bit windows. The trouble is, avg free is not compatible with this version of windows. Does anyone know where i can get another free anti virus application that will work on 64 bit windows?

Likewise with zonealarm, where can i get a free 64 bit firewall?

Avast anti-virus will work on 64 bit, and it is free for home users.

For a computer running Windows® XP® 64-bit Edition:
An AMD Athlon64, Opteron or Intel EM64T-enabled Pentium 4 / Xeon processor, 128MB RAM (256MB recommended) and 50 MB of free hard disk space

from their system spec. page
http://www.avast.com/eng/system-requirements-avast-home.html

Download site: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a free firewall that supports 64 bit. I've checked all the ones listed in the Free Applications list here, and not one of the 6 supports 64 bit. I don't know if there are others that would.

Hi there:

I just found this:

GhostWall
GhostWall is a highly effecient firewall designed to also show interesting statistics about the current state of your network. It comes configured to protect against inbound threats. Unlike all other firewalls, GhostWall doesn't slow the network performance of online games like Counter-Strike, World of Warcraft and Everquest.
Freeware - Runs on Microsoft Windows XP / XP64 (x64) / 2000 / 2003

http://www.ghostsecurity.com/products/

I found out about it here: http://extended64.com/forums/2/2056/ShowThread.aspx

I don't know how good it is, but it is 64 bit and free. Other than this one, all I have been able to find are beta versions, and I'm not sure if you'd want to play with those.

Unfortunately no, unless you are willing to use beta versions. There aren't even any payware firewalls for 64 bit that are not still in beta. Of course beta versions are generally free.

thanks for the suggestions, but these are all subscription things and as an impoverished student i cant afford to pay for them! Its a shame AVG free is not supported on x64.

Do you know of nay free applications that will run on windows xp pro x64?
