Are you able to open the task manager?

Did anything strange happen before the symptoms you describe?

What security programs are installed?

Do you have Service Pack 2 installed?

What brand and model laptop?

The problem could be related to infection, software problems, or hardware problems. The answers to the above questions will help identify the cause of the problem.

If you can open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), try clicking on the File menu and selecting "New Task..." Enter "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

Does this get the desktop back? If so this may point to a virus infection, a failed virus removal, or a corruption of one of the files that Windows uses during startup.

Try this free, online scan to check: http://safety.live.com/ Choose the "Full Service Scan".
