Hi -- In surfing the web recently, I landed on a Bruce Lee page with a flurry of popups. I wasn't aware of clicking anything, but I could tell right away that something was trying to install itself. As in the past, I immediately went into safe mode and ran Adaware SE, which found lots and lots of stuff. After doing the cleanup, I still had big problems. Opening Internet Explorer would bring up a message saying "Do you wish to watch a news video every day?" I then ran SpyBot Search & Destroy and CWShredder, to no avail. I followed various online instructions (using my other computer) to delete some registry entries and files. I was finding things like Virtual Bouncer and SurfSideKick2. Somehow I got rid of the "news video" message, but now everytime I go on the web I get popups galore, and my system seems to run slower even when I'm offline. My Norton Antivirus will point to two files in "c:\Windows\System32". One is "gziqpi.dll" and the other is "qygkvg.dat". The dat file got my attention before when a web page told me to look for a dat file with "this program will not run in DOS mode" in the first line, which this file has. I read that this was an indicator of Narrator, but Norton attributes both of these files to QoolAid. Norton and other programs will delete these for me, but on rebooting, they're back again. In safe mode, Norton doesn't even detect them. I tried killing them with KillBox, but they always come back. Can someone please help me? Here is my HJT log. Thanks for any help! :thumbsup: -- Marty

You are running an outdated version of HijackThis.. Delete the copy you have and download the latest version of HijackThis!: Download here HJT 1.99.. Save it on your Desktop. You will need now to unzip hijackthis.exe to a permanent folder, such as c:\hjt . This has to be done as HijackThis creates backups. You may need to use these backups.

First create a new folder:
A. Click My Computer icon on your desktop
B. Click C: drive
C. Click the File menu --> New --> Folder, a folder "New folder" will be created.
D. Rename it HJT

Unzip hijackthis.exe to the c:\HJT folder.

Please post a new hijackthis log.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Okay, here's my new HJT log. As you can probably see, there are certain things I have to keep running on work days, such as my WinSSHD server, Phonetools, and Outlook Express. Thanks for your help! -- Marty

Okay, I went down the list and did it all. I couldn't find eetu.exe by navigating or searching. I do find a couple of DLLs that start with SSK in that folder. Is that anything to worry about? I found and deleted rnrint40.exe. I couldn't find the folder CSBB anywhere.

Here's the text that came up when I ran findfile.bat:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is ACB4-3291

I do find a couple of DLLs that start with SSK in that folder. Is that anything to worry about?

You must give me more information about this :flowers:. I have no idea ...

You will find two files with the same name in the C:\WINDOWS\System32\ folder: winspool.exe. One is bad and one is a legitimate Windows file. You must delete the bad file. Right click on each file and select Properties. In the General tab the legitimate file has this Description: Windows 16-bit WOW Psuedo Printer Driver, Size = 2,112 bytes. Do not delete this file.

The bad file has this size = 389,120 bytes, description is unknown, and sure it is not a Microsift file :thumbsup:.

If only the legitimate file is visble:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Click File menu -> Save and name the file as unhide.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
Save this file on the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"SearchSystemDirs"=dword:00000001
"SearchHidden"=dword:00000001
"IncludeSubFolders"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"Hidden"=dword:00000001
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001

Double-click on the unhide.reg file you saved on your desktop, and when it prompts to merge say Yes.

REBOOT your machine.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

Look for the bad file and delete it. Look also for eetu.exe, and delete it, it could be also superhidden.

REBOOT and post a new hijackthis log please.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Both the eetu.exe and winspool.exe came up after running unhide.reg, and I deleted them. The winspool wasn't even in proper alphabetical order. I'm getting a good feeling about this now. :thumbsup:

The two files in my ApplicationData folder that I was curious about are called "sskcwrd.dll" and "sskknwrd.dll" -- They got my attention because when I was getting rid of SurfSideKick2 I was told to be suspicious of anything that had "ssk" in it. I didn't want to go deleting things based on that vague suggestion though.

Here's my new log:

Download Find It NT-2K-XP.zip.

Unzip the contents of Find It NT-2K-XP.zip to a folder, for example c:\findit

Navigate to the c:\findit folder and double-click on find.bat.
A command prompt will open and it will search your computer for malicious files.

Once it has finished a Notepad window will pop up with output.txt.
Copy the entire contents of output.txt into your next post.

Please download and run Silent Runners.vbs: http://www.silentrunners.org/

If you have a script blocking program you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run. Allow the script to run.

Post the log please and a new hijackthis log.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Thanks Cryo. Here are the two logs plus my HJT log. I notice today that a folder called !Submit has returned, which I deleted sometime back, and it contains four files that I also deleted sometime back. I'm confident that the good guys (you) will win.

OK, found it :flowers:

Download Find-qoologic.zip from here
http://forums.skads.org/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=63
Unzip the the files to a folder, for example Qoologic, open the Qoologic folder, and run qoologic.bat. Wait for it to finish.
It will take a while untill the DOS window disapears and disk activity stops. It will produce a log here c:\log.txt. Post please that log.

You can delete the !Submit folder. It was created by Killbox, when you killed some files :thumbsup:.

Yes the files are bad, probably part of TV Media: sskcwrd.dll + sskknwrd.dll

You can delete both.

Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Hi Cryo -- I've tried to run Qoologic.bat a couple of times now, and it gives me this message: "Windows cannot find 'log.txt'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." :thumbsup: Hopefully a quick fix. Thanks for the info about the other files and folder I had mentioned. -- Marty

Yes, I'm getting this message too :thumbsup:

But the log.txt is there. Open Windows Explorer and click the C: drive. log.txt is there.

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Narrator] C:\WINDOWS\System32\yoqgkq.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Download KillBox here: KillBox. Unzip it to your desktop.

Disconnect from the internet.

Select the Delete on reboot option.

Copy and paste the following file to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmxaqx.exe

Press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).

A first dialog box will ask if you want to delete the file on reboot, press the YES button.

A second dialog box will ask you if you want to REBOOT now. Press the NO button.

Repeat the step above for this file:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\yoqgkq.exe

Copy and paste the following file to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\zusnas.dll

Press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).

A first dialog box will ask if you want to delete the file on reboot, press the YES button.

A second dialog box will ask you if you want to REBOOT now. Press the YES button.

Your computer will reboot.

Post a new log please.

Okay, I had HJT fix the Narrator entry and killed those three files with KillBox. Here's my latest HJT log. Sorry if my response times have been a little slow. Don't these things always attack at the busiest times of our lives? :thumbsup:

I can already tell my computer is doing much better. I'm actually not seeing any of the evil activity at the moment. :flowers:
