Hi .. One of the kids clicked on a link whilst on MSN Messenger which resulted in 5 new icons on the desktop these being.. ssh, winstall, mcnew, tell and mt-uninstaller. When they use MSN it apparently randomly forwards the link to people in their contacts and in turn infects them too.
I have run various progs as you suggest including SmitFraudFix, Adaware and SpywareBot and HijackThis!.
This has left us with just the mcnew icon remaining, i can drop it in the recycle bin and empty it but its back on desktop when the comp is restarted at any time. I use AOL and have their McAfee Anti Virus installed, it picks up and deletes winstall but it seems to magically return!!? I have now installed ZoneLab Firewall as suggested.
Please could someone check out my log from HijackThis and give me further instruction? Please bear in mind that I am a novice so do your best to make your reply Idiot proof!!! Would it also help to uninstall MSN Messenger and reinstall it?
My thanks in advance!!

Hi again.. Just realised that the file mcnew reappears on the desktop everytime Windows Live Messenger (MSN) is started.. also as MSN starts McAfee picks up -
Generic Lowzones.f trojan and
Generic Downloader.k trojan
These are apparently then deleted by McAfee but as before, when MSN is started they have returned and are picked up by McAfee again!??
A viscious circle! Please help as the kids will be gutted if i ban MSN!!
Thanks.. Graham

Hello,

Your MSN Messenger is infected.. that's why you should uninstall it.
Once your system is clean again, you may reinstall it again, but not before I tell you everything is ok again.

So uninstall your Messenger and reboot.
After reboot, delete next folder:

C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger

Also uninstall SweetIM For Internet Explorer, because I do not recommend it since it collects info.

Then, First of all, you didn't unzip/extract hijackthis.. and it's still in the tempfolder.
So I strongly advise to unzip/extract hijackthis.zip.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/xpcompressedexplanation.html
Create a permanent folder and move hijackthis.exe into it. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted.
How do you make a permanent folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files.
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present (some entries won't be present anymore):

R3 - URLSearchHook: SweetIM For Internet Explorer - {BC4FFE41-DE9F-46fa-B455-AAD49B9F9938} - C:\Program Files\Macrogaming\SweetIMBarForIE\toolbar.dll
O2 - BHO: SWEETIE - {1A0AADCD-3A72-4b5f-900F-E3BB5A838E2A} - C:\PROGRA~1\MACROG~1\SWEETI~1\toolbar.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {73364D99-1240-4dff-B12A-67E448373148} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: SweetIM For Internet Explorer - {BC4FFE41-DE9F-46fa-B455-AAD49B9F9938} - C:\Program Files\Macrogaming\SweetIMBarForIE\toolbar.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SweetIM] C:\Program Files\Macrogaming\SweetIM\SweetIM.exe
<== not required to start up with windows
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SweetIM] C:\Program Files\Macrogaming\SweetIM\SweetIM.exe <== see above
O9 - Extra button: Run IMVU - {d9288080-1baa-4bc4-9cf8-a92d743db949} - C:\Documents and Settings\Kids\Start Menu\Programs\IMVU\Run IMVU.lnk (file missing) <== it's missing anyway

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

---------------------

Please download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Then click on the Scanner tab at the top. Click the "Settings" tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and click Automatically generate report after every scan. Click back to the "Scan" tab and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
  • Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot!!
* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot, it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog and the log from AVG Antispyware.

Hi again..Think i've followed your instructions with no problems.. a couple of things i have noticed though, in add and remove programmes the first thing listed is 888bar which i think can cause problems? and secondly for some reason MSN Messenger is still there although its now a much earlier version and i cannot find where to uninstall it, perhaps it was part of the preinstalled stuff on this pc?
Anyway here are the log files as requested... Thanks for your help so far, much appreciated!

Hi Graham,

To answer your questions..

for some reason MSN Messenger is still there although its now a much earlier version and i cannot find where to uninstall it

You are most probably talking about the messenger folder and not the MSN Messenger folder. The messenger folder is your Windows Messenger and is indeed preinstalled on XP. No need to remove that one (since it has a different uninstall method than MSN Messenger).
Also, this infection you were dealing with only infects the MSN Messenger and not your Windows messenger.
In case you don't have MSN Messenger, no need to uninstall anything then.

in add and remove programmes the first thing listed is 888bar which i think can cause problems?

You won't be able to uninstall it anymore since the uninstaller was already deleted previously, but to get rid of that entry in add/remove, open your Hijackthis, click config below > misc tools > Open uninstall manager
There you'll find a list of all programs installed.
There select 888bar and choose: delete this entry

Now let's deal with the rest..

Your Hijackthislog looks clean again, but there's still a lot we have to delete manually.
Interesting thing here is, I see the pe386 rootkit installed here, but it isn't active since the related files are visible.. which is good, so you can delete them without problems.

First, go to start > run and copy and paste next in the field:

sc delete pe386

Hit enter. A small cmdbox will appear and disappear again, this is normal.

Then uninstall SpywareBot via add/remove programs, because this is a so called spywarecleaner with a bad reputation. Don't uninstall Spybot Search and Destroy, because the names may look the same, but Spybot Search and Destroy (S&D) is OK. So it's spywarebot you have to uninstall.

Then delete next files and folders manually:

C:\ylcx.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcc.dll
C:\oyihjsb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tell.exe
C:\Program Files\SpywareBot <== folder
C:\ugunrb.exe
C:\ecjavycq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lzx32.sys
C:\faxf.exe

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click "Delete".
  • Click "Delete Files", "Delete cookies" and "Delete history"
  • Click Close below.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu..
  • Click the Clear now button below.. A new window will popup what to clear.
  • Select all and click the Clear button again.
  • Click OK to close the Options window
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Then scan with McAfee antivirus and let it delete everything it is finding.
Reboot afterwards.

 :flowers: Hi again... Have followed your instructions, deleted the files etc and run McAfee. Nothing was found by McAfee.. excellent!
As previously mentioned I have since installed ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall.. is there anything else i can do or install to help prevent another infection? I have told the kids never to click a link unless they know exactly what it is for and who its come from and also to run the virus scan over any files they may be sent from friends via email etc. McAfee is scheduled to run once a week, is this enough? I shall run AVG Anti Spyware once a week from now on as well.
I'm assuming we are now virus free? and the kids can have their Messenger back?
Thanks again for your help, its very much appreciated!

Hello,

Yes, you can use messenger again. And yes, the scheduled scans are OK. McAfee real time protection will also already prevent malware.

Glad I could help.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.
How to use SpywareBlaster

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
