Hi, I'm hoping one of you fine people can help me out of this mess...

It all started after I downloaded IE7; at least that's when it seemed to start.

Shortly after, I ran spybot and got the SmitFraud and SmitFraud Toolbar 888 messages. After every restart and scan SmitFraud always reappears (sometimes accompanied by other spybot friends).

My anti-virus program found some trojans, but seems to have cleaned them up.

Lastly, browser windows keep opening on their own, trying to push WinAntiVirus Pro 2006 on me...

After finding your site, I followed through with all of your preposting instructions.

Adaware SE - finds adware, and cleans it
Spybot - SmitFraud (and the the 888 toolbar - a false positive I believe)
CA Anti-virus - was clean on the last run
HouseCall Anti-virus - found an .exe and .dll file, that it couldn't clean, but recommended that I delete which I did)
McAfee Stinger - didn't find anything

Here is my Hijack This Log:

Also, after finding your site, I downloaded Zone Alarm - to get a double firewall system in place.

Thanks in advance.

That's exactly what I need - you have hidden malware. Please download
VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Still some pests in there. Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

  • After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
  • Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
  • It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
  • To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
    • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
    • Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.

Note: I haven't seen a self-launching WinAntiVirus 2006 window in quite awhile (knock on wood)

Much better! Still getting 888 toolbar, but hopefully the folks with spybot will get that resolved.

Thanks a lot.

Smitfraud toolbar 888 kept showing up in spybot scans; but the spybot people recently released updates that seem to have corrected the problem! (which I only downloaded this morning). So, I think I'm ok.
