i've been having tons of issues with smitfraudC and toolbar888. in my struggles against them i've tried a multitude of things and i think i may have finally broken my computer. some registry files were modified and my computer just froze. it's frozen before so i rebooted, it went to the desktop and then i had maybe 5 seconds before it froze again. ctrl+alt+del does nothing, so i reboot again. now explorer.exe won't even load and i just have my background picture. i can get task manager to run and can load explorer.exe through there, but again, i have about 5 seconds before the whole thing freezes up. i did a repair install of windows and the same thing is still happening.

i am pretty sure these problems are not being caused by smitfraud or any other spyware. i am 99.9% sure they are because i used so many programs to try and get rid of them in addition to deleting some files that were suspected spyware.

i've also tried booting it up in safe mode, but the problem persists. the desktop will appear for a moment and then close. safe mode tries to re-run it and it gets shut down again. however, i am able to use task manager to run more programs in safe mode without the freezing.

 help me, please. i have no clue what to do and i'm so upset with myself for doing this because i just got this computer.

if it helps, i'm running xp home edition, sp2.

I see that you are receiving assistance in the HJT forum. It is important that you follow your helper's directions and not do things he hasn't told you to do as this will make it much more difficult for him to help you. I see that you put the link to this topic in a response to your HJT thread so at least he is aware of the problems you are having.

Please be sure not to start new threads concerning your computer problems but rather post that information in your HJT thread until he has finished helping you.

It would be helpful for your helper to know what exactly what you did prior to your computer freezing. What programs did you use and in what order? Please post that info. in your HJT thread.
