Hi, I keep having a computer virus show up on my computer. AVG says it removes it, but it keeps showing up. I tried turning off the system restore removing it, and then turning it back on to no avail. Filename: optimize.exe I came to your forum through a Google search and saw another topic similar to the same virus, but the other guy had others as well. Anyhow, any help is appreciated :

Hi

First of all remove the Peper Trojan.
1. Download and save PeperFix.
REBOOT in SafeMode: Starting your computer in Safe mode, use the F8 method,
and run the program.
It will remove the files, leaving one orphaned entry to be cleaned up with Hijack this.

2. REBOOT again into SafeMode and run it again for good measure.

3. REBOOT normally.

You are using Kazaa. This is not technically malware by itself, but it installs malware in order to run properly and it opens the door for every other nasty program you can think of. I strongly recommend that you remove it. Read this article for alternatives that will provide some of the same function without the garbage: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you opt to remove it, first use Add/Remove Program to remove it and any reference to Altnet and P2P Networking. Go to your control panel, then to add/remove programs...uninstall P2P networking...If/when asked whether you also want to remove Altnet components, say 'Yes'.
P2P Networking is a totally useless Kazaa add-on, and it's been reported to be responsible for serious system slowdowns.

You have Wild Tangent installed. Wild Tangent collects information about you and your usage. The advertisements may also contain pornographic or other material that you might find inappropriate. You can follow these instructions to uninstall it: No. 8 - Uninstallation .

Please uninstall from Add\Remove Programs, if found:
Windows ServeAd
Windows ControlAd

Please print or copy these instructions because you are not able to access the Internet in SafeMode.

Download Ad-aware SE 1.05: here
Install it. When you get the last screen, with the "Finish" button and 3 options, uncheck those three items.
Open AdAware and click the "Check for updates now" link. Close AdAware. Don't use it yet.

Download System Security Suite here:
System Security Suite Download & Tutorial. Unzip it to your desktop.
Install the program. Don't use it yet.

Make sure you are set to show hidden files and folders:
A. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.
B. Click the View tab.
C. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
D. Uncheck Hide extensions for known filetypes and Hide protected operating system files.
How to see hidden files in Windows

REBOOT into SafeMode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup: Starting your computer in Safe mode

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

Hi, thanks for your help!

I downloaded and ran PeperFix like you said, and it did not find any files while in Safe Mode. I removed Kazaa and WildTangent because I don't need them. Windows ServeAd and ControlAd were files that I noticed kept showing up on Adaware, but kept coming back, so they're gone. There were a few files that weren't there to check when I ran HijackThis!, so I am assuming that they had already been taken care of. When I searched for the files afterwards, I didn't find any of the specific ones you listed, but found 2 "Prefetch" P2P Networking files. So I just deleted them. I then ran AdAware and the Security Suite successfully. I attempted to do a scan using Trendmicro, but the plugin did not want to load properly and I got an error. So I couldn't run it.

Thanks again!

downloaded and ran PeperFix like you said, and it did not find any files while in Safe Mode.

My bad . It was not Peper.

Please search for this file and delete it:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tgaf54Nv.exe <-- this file

This is PurityScan adware:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wnsapisu.exe <-- this file
Did you delete this file ? (if not, the fix is below)

Download the inf file (right click, --> Save Target As) and save it to your desktop.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file on your desktop and select 'Install'

This should clear out those trusted entries that will not be removed.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WNST] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wnsapisu.exe

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Search for these files and delete them if found:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wnsapisu.exe <-- this file

Empty the recycle bin.

REBOOT normally and post a new log please.
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Let's see if this did it. When I was going into Safe Mode, I was going under the Administrator. After I found that nothing you mentioned applied in there, I logged in under my other user name in Safe mode and was able to remove some things. Thanks!
