hello

my computer is driving me crazy ( along with everything else in life nowadays!)

my computer is only 2 years old

it's compaq 2.0 GHz athlon with 512MB, 80GB
operating system windows XP

I keep up with defragging, etc. clean the internet cache.

symptoms: computer freezes up, the printer won't print. my mouse won't navigate and my CD rom will run but will not record.

I am all ready to have to spend the bucks on a new computer, but maybe there are ideas out there I should try first.

Could someone out there give me a math lesson in the steps of mega, giga bytes latter?

thanks

If you want to spend money on a new computer then you can receive excellent advise here. Just tell us what you want to do with the computer (Game, Work\School, Internet?) and what is your budget and watch the advise flow in.
BUT if you want to fix the computer you described we can help you with that also. Probably the biggest expense will be for the shipping on a set of Recovery Disks from Compaq, if it comes to that. But lets not go there yet.
It's your choice. We are here to help.

Recovery disks from Compaq are roughly $15 to $18 - shipping included. They'll send them out immediately and you should have them in only a couple of days (I've recently ordered 2 sets).

Do you have the Compaq Recovery disk or the Windows XP Installation CD?

Have you used any software that alters, modifies or "cleans" the registry?

How long have these problems existed and did they all begin to occur at the same time or at different times?

Have you lost power to the computer (lightening, electric off or brownout) just before these problems began?

Starting with the mouse - is it wired or wireless, and is it PS2 or USB?

If it is USB see if it has an adapter on it that is removeable thereby leaving it PS2 connectable. If so, shutdown the computer, remove the adapter, and plug it into the other type connection whichever it may be (USB or PS2) or try a known good mouse from another computer and again, using the other type of port than you are currently using.

If it is wireless, try borrowing a wired mouse.
