Posted 26 November 2006 - 06:56 PM

Last night I got a nasty case of the Virusbursters disease. I'm running a fully updated Windows XP.

I followed the "How To Remove Virusbursters" instructions for the automatic removal, and that seemed to help. Then suddenly the whole thing started over again.

Then I tried following the manual removal instructions, but none of the dll files that I was supposed to remove were present.

Then I read somewhere that Prevx would get rid of it, so I used the Prevx software and that did seem to get rid of Virusbursters. Although it did leave an entry for it on my quickstart bar and my Add/Remove Programs list.

Unfortunately, a range of other stuff has been popping up. Random IE pop-up windows and even Firefox tabs coming up with ads for porn and music sites, and most of all for BS anti-virus programs. One repeat offender is something like Win Anti-VirusPro, or something like that. Also, Windows Explorer has been crashing, leaving me with a blank desktop.

[Edit - I see others are having issues with this as well. Also, one bit I forgot - my Norton Anti-Virus periodically gives me the "A virus tried to do something, but I stopped it" pop-up message. The virus is always some random name.exe, and never the same one twice.]

I have run the following:

Spybot S&D (found and removed a bunch of stuff)
Ad-Aware (found and removed some stuff)
Panda Scan (found a ton of spyware, over a thousand files, according to the scan, but the free version wouldn't clean them)
Windows Live Help Full Scan (sorry if I've got the name slightly off, there've been so many - it found some things and cleaned them)
McAfee Stinger (didn't seem to find anything)

Still having problems, although my processes list in task manager looks pretty clean. Anyway, here's my hijack this log, if anyone can help. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
You're on the right track.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

===============

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be available to you at certain points of the removal process (while in Safe Mode). Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

1. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
2. Run Smitfraud
  • Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
  • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
  • The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
3. Clean out your Temporary Internet files
  • Internet Explorer
    • Close Internet Explorer and close any instances of Windows Explorer.
    • Click Start -> Control Panel and then double-click Internet Options.
    • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
    • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
    • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
    • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
    • Click OK.
  • Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed)
    • Open Firefox and go to Tools -> Options.
    • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
    • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
    • Click OK to close the Options window.
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
4. Next Click Start -> Control Panel and then double-click Display.
  • Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button.
  • Click on the Web tab.
  • Under Web Pages you may see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button.
  • Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
5. Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

6. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess.

  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
7. Reboot back into Normal Windows Mode

8. Run SmitfraudFix.
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
  • Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
9. Please post the following logs:
  • C:\rapport.txt
  • AVG Anti-Spyware log
  • A new HijackThis log
You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Hi Sam, thanks so much for helping. I've run into a problem trying to enter Windows Safe Mode. When it loads, I get a completely blank desktop, totally black, no taskbar, just the white text at the sides saying that I'm in safe mode. If I ctrl-alt-delete, I can start a new explorer process there, and the desktop appears along with the message giving me the option to enter safe mode or use system restore. I click Yes to enter safe mode and get about 2 seconds to do something before it goes blank again. It does this no matter how many times I restart the process, and sometimes spontaneously restarts before going blank again. It did this in both my regular account and admin. Normal Windows mode appears to be fine.

Note that I did manage to run smitfraudfix.cmd, and it kept running even while the dektop was blinking in and out of existence. It got through the registry cleaning, but I had to cancel out of the disk cleanup because of the other problems. I notice in Windows normal mode, my desktop has gone blank, which I know happens with this program from time to time. Below is my rapport.txt, but I've been unable to go any further because of the problems in safe mode. I'm also still getting random IE pop-ups in normal mode (even though I don't use IE and never have it open).

Hopefully there's a fix for this safe mode problem so I can carry out the rest of the instructions! :-)

Ok, go ahead and proceed with the steps as described, but in normal mode. Then post the log from AVG and a new hijackthis log. We'll go from there.

Sam,

Here's the logs. FYI, when I opened Firefox to come here and post this, another IE popup opened.

The AVG log is huge, will take several posts to fit it.

Ok, I thought I was within the post size limits on those, but they got cut off. I can tell you that everything in that log was a tracking cookie except for the top few items.

Here's the hjt log.

That's ok. I don't need to see all the cookies.
Empty your recycle bin, including your Norton protected items.

AVG picked up on something else that we need to take a look at.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Here you go, sir. I'm gonna edit out some of those cookies in the AVG log to make this thread a little less ugly. :-)

Oh, by the way, I've been having the oddest problem lately, which may be related. When I try to right click something in a web browser (Firefox or IE), sometimes it won't let me. I select 'Save As,' get a little hour glass for a second, then nothing happens. Made it a little tricky to save the ComboFix.exe to my desktop! Restarting Firefox a few times seemed to clear it up temporarily.

That may be a separate issue not related to the malware infection that is still present. Let's clean up the malware and then we'll come back to it if it's still a problem.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt even if Vundofix found no infected files.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Also post a new hijackthis log.

That took care of some of it.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.
