I have moved to Mexico to teach English, but for my course i have to write essays and i'm staying with a mexican family. Unfortunately the only computer in the house that has word it closes as soon as i try to type anything.

I downloaded hijack this but don't really know what to do with it, also have updated windows. I don't know what else to do. If theres a topis covering this already, i'm really sorry, just point me in the right direction.

thanks

Lori

yes deleting that file is the first thing to try. Make sure that word is not open at the time as it will not allow you to delete it if it is. Does Outlook work OK? this also uses normal.dot file when composing a email by default. It could be a font issue. Maybe the default font has been deleted. Try changing the font and see if it will allow you to type then.

Are you saying that "Word" closes when you try to use it or that the computer shuts down?

What version of Word is this?

Try the following:
Open a blank Word document.

Click on "Help"

See if it offers a choice for "Detect and Repair".

where's the normal.dot.file? will it be in the notes from hijack this? I'm not very computer literate, can you say things to me simply

Also everythings in spanish so i've tried to look for detect and repare, changed fonts but it still wouldn't work.

1. Double click on My Computer.

2. Click on the Tools menu in the top menu bar.

3. Click on Folder Options...

4. Click on the View Tab

5. Click on the little button next to "Show hidden files and folders" (in the Advanced Settings box)

6. Click OK.

7. Double click on Local Disk (C:)

8. Double click on the Documents and Settings folder

9. Double click on the folder with your user name

10. Double click on Application Data. (That folder will be dimmed)

11. Double click on the Microsoft folder.

12. Double click on the Templates folder.

13. Right click on the Normal.dot file and delete it

14. Now you need to hide your hidden folders again

15. Click on the Tools menu in the top menu bar.

16. Click on Folder Options...

17. Click on the View tab.

18. Click on the little button next to "Do not show hidden files and folders" (in the Advanced Settings box)

19. Click on OK.

20. Close all the open windows and you are done!

That's it when you start Word again, you will have a new blank document - a new Normal.dot.

winword.exe /a is NOT A FIX. It just is a diagnostic mode. If it works in that mode in means you have problems with your normal.dot file or the in the registry. Did you follow the link in that article to the registry fix.

If that doesn't work uninstall and reinstall word.

Solution:
In Word> Tools> AutoCorrect Options...> in Smart Tags Tab> UNCHECK anything that has to do with OUTLOOK in parentheses

FWIW: You have responded to a thread from 2006, I'm sure it has been resolved by now .
