I have popups for winantivirus and assorted other things. Something crashes my Adaware, turns off McAfee automatic virus scan etc. I had smitfraud toolbar 888 removed but it came back even though I had "restore" shut off. I have run AVG, SmitRem,Spybot, Adaware(unsuccessfully) with no success (well, the computer runs faster but still has the popups). Any help greatly appreciated! Fred

Hey Frederick

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Whilst completing the fix please use the Internet as little as posssible. Do not install any programs whilst we fix your computer - even the smallest of programs can wreak havoc.

Two Anti-Virus Programs:

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
  • False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
  • System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either McAffee or Symantec

Submit Files:

You have a file/s of interest to us. It would help the detection rates of the tools we use by getting hold of samples of these infections.

1. Go this website: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=15
2. Copy/paste this into the 'Link to Topic' box: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/73202/winantivirus-and-other-malware/
3. Copy/paste this into the 'Browser for File' box: C:\WINDOWS\system32\migonv.dll
4. Let me know if it was successful or not.

Vundo Fix:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Hey Jamie, Thanks for the reply. I'd be happy to submit the malware file but when I click on the hyperlink in your response it just takes me to the BC Homepage. No boxes to paste anything into. Before I run the VundoFix, I'll wait and see if you can tell me what I am doing wrong and I'll try again. Fred

Vundo fix didn't find any infected files. Something's there though as I am getting a fair number of Winantivirus popups. Fred

I'll deal with the problems in my next post.

I didn't mean copy/paste the information there - I meant for you to upload the file from your computer.

Go to this topic: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3090.0

When you click reply there should be an option to attach a file. Please copy/paste this filepath into that box:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\migonv.dll

Then make sure its uploaded and post. I'll let you know if I get the file.

Thanks alot.

Hi Jamie, Glad you got the file (finally - sorry about that!) I removed both Norton and McAfee (AVG still there). I ran Vundo fix after adding the files. Still said no infected files found. Below the HT log. Fred

Hey Frederick

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Whilst completing the fix please use the Internet as little as posssible. Do not install any programs whilst we fix your computer - even the smallest of programs can wreak havoc.

Rename Hijackthis:

1. Locate the program Hijackthis.
2. Select the file, right-click and select Rename.
3. Please change the name to: jamielaw

I removed both Norton and McAfee (AVG still there).

We need to get this sorted - without a functioning Antivirus your wide open to infection. You didn't uninstall Norton or McAffee successfully. Also the AVG product you have installed is AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 - this is not the same as AVG Antivirus. Get me an uninstall list and I'll tell you what to get rid of:

Symantec Removal:

You have traces of Symantec products on your computer. Please can you download and run this removal tool to get rid of them.

Uninstall List:

1. Open Hijackthis and select: Open the Misc Tools section.
2. Then choose: Open Uninstall Manager and click Save List.
3. Save the list to your computer.
4. Then copy the contents of the list back to this thread in your next reply.

Its very important you follow these instructions correctly - please could you try them again:

Vundo Fix:
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
  • Copy&Paste the entries below into the box:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\migonv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vnogim.*
  • Click Add Files and Click Close Window
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in your next reply.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If you have any queries or problems then make sure to ask. Please could you also post a Hijackthis log.

Hi Jamie, Actually I had uninstalled Norton a long time ago when I put in McAfee. It leaves lots of junk behind however. I ran the "removal tool". When I uninstalled McAfee a little while ago, I used Add/Remove programs and also manually took out some stuff as recommended on their support website. It too leaves a lot of stuff behind. I have another computer running that I am using to read your responses and only have this one open when I need to download something you have linked. Otherwise this one isn't connected to the Internet so it should limit the risk of infection. I renamed Hijack this. I ran Vundo fix again after pasting in the files as directed. Still no infected files found.
This is the Uninstall List. HIjack this (aka JamieLaw) to follow. Fred

Antivirus:

Please download one of these free antiviruses and install it, either AVG or Avast

ComboFix:

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running! That may cause it to stall.

Good morning Jamie. Downloaded and installed Avast. Figured out why McAfee still had lots of files after uninstalling it yesterday. Forgot to reboot. (idiot!) Had two cups of coffee so should do better today. Here's the combofix log. Meant to say thanks for your help yesterday. I guess I need that coffee! Fred

Hey Frederick

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Whilst completing the fix please use the Internet as little as posssible. Do not install any programs whilst we fix your computer - even the smallest of programs can wreak havoc.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp9.tmp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\BigFixClientOverride.dll
    C:\VundoFix Backups
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\migonv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddabb.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Registry:

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modfying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.

Backup Registry:

First, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line:

regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg

Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

Registry Modification/s:

1. Open Notepad and copy/paste the following code (do not make any alterations to it) :

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\migonv]

2. Save the file to your desktop as: "FixME.reg" (make sure you include the quotes)
3. The file should look like this: Posted Image
4. Double-click on FixME.reg. It will ask if you want to merge it with the registry - click Yes.

Please could you then post a fresh Hijackthis log

Hi Jamie, When I pasted the files to Killbox, Avast spotted the migonv.dll as a virus. The other antiviruses hadn't. Anyway, I told Avast to ignore so not to interfere with Killbox. Did the registry mod. Log below. Fred
