Does anyone know how to remove a trojan virus called "trojan.win32.dnschanger.gi" ? I used a free virus scan online from Kapersky and was informed that I have this virus, but no help on how to deal with it. Under the file heading of the results window it said "skipped".
I tried to research this virus online. I came up with a few links to the above virus name but again no help as to how I could remove it from my pc.
Is there ANYONE out there that can offer advice as to how I can deal with this virus?
Thank you,
Trekker57

Hello trekker57,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
*********************

Please download, update and run the a-squared Free 2.0

Select the "Deep Scan" button and press the Scan button.

If malware is found, click the button "Remove Selected Malware"
and save the log file by clicking on "Save Report".

Let it quarentine whatever it finds.

*********************

Disable your antivirus program and go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

Reboot and post the BitDefender log, the a-squared Free log and a fresh Hijackthis log.

Hi SifuMike, Thank you for taking the time to help me with this problem. I did everything that you directed me to do. I downloaded the new version of Java(Java Runtime Enviornment 5.0 Update 9; downloaded and ran a-squared Free 2.0 and quarantined the detected results; downloaded and ran BitDefender and ran a fresh HijackThis log. All the results were saved and appear below. I look forward to your reply.

Hi trekker57,

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

CCleaner Tutorial

*******************************************

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key. If that does not work this go to this site: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://search.imesh.com/search/index.html?src=ssb
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.imesh.com/search/index.html?src=ssb
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: XBTP01621 Class - {9EDB89EF-E4BC-4c70-B102-8F7A4365EE33} - C:\PROGRA~1\IMESHA~1\IMESHM~1\MediaBar.dll (file missing)

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but I suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
(Description: Intel hotkey applet. Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] \"C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe\" SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
(Description: RealPlayer system tray application. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot to the Normal Mode.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK

Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Then post the results from the Kapersky scan.

Post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

SifuMike, I did everything as you had suggested on your last post. Here are the results. When I ran my pc in SAFE MODE as you had suggested, I didn't see the following which shows up on the HijackThis log(normal boot up) below:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.imesh.com/search/index.html?src=ssb
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://search.imesh.com/search/index.html?src=ssb
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

The same virus which I had mentioned before is still there(Trojan.Win32.DNSChanger.gi ).

What do you think is going on here?

Hi trekker57,

When I ran my pc in SAFE MODE as you had suggested, I didn't see the following which shows up on the HijackThis log(normal boot up) below:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.imesh.com/search/index.html?src=ssb
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://search.imesh.com/search/index.html?src=ssb
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

Then do the fixes for the above in the Normal mode and that should get rid of them.

The same virus which I had mentioned before is still there(Trojan.Win32.DNSChanger.gi ).

What do you think is going on here?

Not to worry, it is in your System Restore folder where it will not harm anything. We will set a new restore point which will clean out the System Restore folder.

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP5\A0000879.exe Infected: Trojan.Win32.DNSChanger.gi skipped

Wish all problems were this easy to solve.

Let's clean your System Restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows.
The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files.
This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

Please read and follow
How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!

Sifu Mike, Sorry for the delay getting back to you.....yes, the virus(trojan.win32.DNSchanger.gi)has finally been eliminated from my p.c.! I ran all the virus scans one more time to make sure my p.c. was clean which it was.
I can't thank you enough for all your help. It was a struggle(well, it was for me at least), but it was all worth it in the end. You've been very patient....
It's a shame that there are people out in cyberland that have nothing else better to do than to dream up these malicious viruses. Hopefully there will come a day when it will be technologically easier to track down and prosecute these humanoids.
One more thing, I was wondering if there are courses or other means available for me to learn the skills that you obviously have in order to repair and/or eliminate p.c. viruses. I would really like to be available to others that are esperiencing the same type of problem that I just had.
Thank you once again for your time,
Trekker57

Hi trekker57,

Thank you for the kind words. I hope your computer continues to run smoothly for you.

http://www.virusvault.co.uk/fusionbb/showforum.php?fid/37/
HijackThis training is provided at Bleeping Computer, Geekstogo, Malware Removal, SpywareInfo, and TomCoyote, CastleCops forums.

Sometimes the classes are full, but if you really want to learn malware removal, you will persist.
You need to have some (not a lot) technical background. You don't need to know much about malware, but you do need to understand the basics of how your PC works.

You need to be able to dedicate some time to the training. Training depends on the user, but it may take several months, so be sure to set aside enough time.
What you've put into it is what you'll get out of it. :flowers:
