Hi guys, I've got something nasty on my computer that SpywareBlaster, McAffee, AdAware etc. have all failed to pin down... it spawns lots of suspicious popups, and a couple of times even delivered audio ads that played out my speakers and couldn't be stopped. If anybody could help me, it would mean a lot to me.

Hello,

The current formatting of your log makes it difficult to read, so in notepad:
On top, click Format >uncheck Word Wrap.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your C:\.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • In case it says that nothing was found, Right click the list box (white box) in the main VundoFix window.
  • Select Add More Files? from the menu that comes up. This will open a new VundoFix window.
  • In the Window: copy and paste next in the first field: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\LAN_27.dll
  • Click the Add Files button.
  • Click the "Close Window" button.
  • Click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

The VundoFix tool unfortunately didn't find anything, even after manually adding that file and restarting the computer. But here's the HiJack This log again un-wordwrapped. Sorry about the difficulty there.

The VundoFix tool unfortunately didn't find anything, even after manually adding that file and restarting the computer

Are you sure you did it exactly as I described? Because if you manually add it, it should find what you added.

Can you try again? Also, can you post the Vundofix-log?

Let's deal with the leftovers in Hijackthis now..

Please disable Spywareguard as it may interfere with the Hijackthisfixes.
Double-click the red SG icon in your system tray.
Click "Options".
Under General, uncheck all 3 options, then click "Save Settings"
Close Spywareguard.
We will enable it once your system is clean.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {31FF080D-12A3-439A-A2EF-4BA95A3148E8} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A5FA36E1-B7F7-4FAC-9F70-17DF2B8AC61B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\LAN_27.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the Posted Image icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Let me know in your next reply how things are running now.

Things are still running OK after that... my Internet Explorer still fully functions. Probably no way to tell yet whether the spyware is all gone but it hasn't popped up at me yet.

When I installed the new Java though, and then re-activated my Spyware Guard, I got a message that a BHO was added at c:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\ssv.dll . Can I safely assume this is just part of the Java update and need not be removed?

Hello,

Can I safely assume this is just part of the Java update and need not be removed

Yes, it's a part of Sun java and you may allow it in your spyware guard.

Perform a scan with an updated McAfee to get rid of the leftovers if still present.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.
How to use SpywareBlaster

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Alright... so far so good, no suspicious popups in the last few hours. I think we may have squashed it. I already have SpywareBlaster and some other cross-protection, but thanks for the recommendations. I really appreciate the speedy help you've offered.
