Perfect Codec 4 And

This PC has AVG returning clean scan, Adaware clear, SpyBot clear but I still see in Add/Remove programs this Perfect Codec 4 which appears from googling to be the pits and also in Task Mamager I have started devldr32.exe which BC says is a no-no in the startup area.

Over the past 2 days I have done all the cleanup that is suggested including TrendMicro and the above mentioned stuff. I will now try to post the HT log I have created in the hope someone will assist!

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not run a scan yet!

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log.

Now for the fun part.


Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be available to you at certain points of the removal process (while in Safe Mode). Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.


1. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
2. Run Smitfraud
  • Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
  • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
  • The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.


    A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

    The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
3. Clean out your Temporary Internet files
  • Internet Explorer
    • Close Internet Explorer and close any instances of Windows Explorer.
    • Click Start -> Control Panel and then double-click Internet Options.
    • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
    • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
    • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
    • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
    • Click OK.
  • Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed)
    • Open Firefox and go to Tools -> Options.
    • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
    • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
    • Click OK to close the Options window.
      Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
      A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
4. Next Click Start -> Control Panel and then double-click Display.
  • Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button.
  • Click on the Web tab.
  • Under Web Pages you may see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button.
  • Click Ok then Apply and Ok.
5. Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.


6. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess.

  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
7. Reboot back into Normal Windows Mode


8. Run SmitfraudFix.
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
  • Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.


    Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
9. Please post the following logs:
  • C:\rapport.txt
  • AVG Anti-Spyware log
  • A new HijackThis log
You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Now the bad news:
Although the AVG Anti-Spyware settings were exactly as instructed, after a scan lasting about an hour 4 adware medium risk items were quarantined. When I then selected the Reports icon no reports were available. Before exiting safe mode I decided to relaunch the AVG Anti-spyware just to have another look for the report and received a message thus:

Something bad happened in the application. An error diagnostic file has been saved to the AVG AntiSpyware folder called avgas.err. There is indeed such a file. Let me know exactly what you feel I should do with it.

Your log is looking pretty good. How is your computer running now?

Hopefully it's just an isolated error, but I'd like to see the contents of avgas.err, if possible. Can you view it in notepad and copy it here?

I have this morning (UK) tested the AVG Anti-spyware reporting function and it actually is OK in normal mode. Possibly it doesn't write the log properly in safe mode? I will run a complete scan now and see. Wait at least an hour!

Otherwise PC is behaving OK apart from AOL running Spyscan on boot and AVG anti-virus doing the same which means I don't get control for some 15 minutes. I can't fix the AOL (the PC usually connects on an AOL broadband service and I don't want to mess with the settings) I'll reset the AVG Anti-virus.

Will post the complete scan log if I get one later.

Sounds like AVG is ok.

"devldr32.exe" is part of sound card software from Creative Technology. It's not malware.
Is it causing problems?

devldr32.exe seems innocuous on this PC. I was only concerned that if you look in the Startup List (tab at the head of the page here) the file, whilst recognised as a legitimate Creative file, is also labelled as possibly harmful. But I guess this one may be the legitimate one. Is there a way to check?

Otherwise many thanks for the help which has made me feel like making a donation. Great job! Now where the heck is my wallet....

If it was found as one of your startup items, then yes then we could assume that it was malicious. But it's just one of your running processes, so I don't think it's anything to worry about. But you can have the file scanned here and you'll find out it's ok or not.

Here are some prevention steps for you.


Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.

    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thanks for that. Got another question which maybe I should put as a new topic or maybe it is part of this particular saga.

As final cleanup I disabled and re-enabled System Restore. Then I did a check with Autoruns. (BTW the link given is out of date as sysinternals is redirected. Maybe someone should fixxit.) In Autoruns I noticed that an entry titled AvgClean with image path C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\avgclnit.sys was reporting as file not found.

Being suspicious I wondered if this was an indication that a (maybe critical) component of the AVG anti-virus software might have been disabled in the infection this PC has just suffered. Any ideas?

I could put this as a new topic if you feel it appropriate.

It's doubtful. Smitfraud is not known for disabling antimalware programs. You may want to verify if this file is truly missing or not.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\avgclnit.sys

If it is, you can simply reinstall AVG and the file should be replaced during installation.

I reckon this subject is now resolved and please accept my thanks. I am unused to such precise and accurate advice in this industry and so I am not sure what level of donation is normal. But keep up the good work and don't spend it all at once.
