Hello, friends,

I have been trying to clean up and maintain the computer my kids use. It's a Dell Dimension 4300 desktop, running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2, Pentium 4, with an 80GB harddrive and it is updated to the best of my knowledge. It has tons of empty space on the drive, so I know for certain that's not the issue. Before I started any of my maintenance, I turned off System Restore. I've run everything in Safe Mode and in the separate accounts in regular mode:

Symantec found nothing.
Spybot - found CasaleMedia - which I deleted. I also blocked that site in both IE and Firefox after deleting all cookies and temporary files. I then searched for it on the drive and found nothing (which I know also means nothing ).
AdAware - found nothing.
Spyware Blaster is updated and running.
I ran Defrag several times.

But the computer refuses to run a check disk - no matter where I am (safe mode or accounts). I always heard that you have an issue if the disk check won't run. I had thought in the past that disk space was the main issue, but I know that's not a problem on this system. Any ideas? Am I being paranoid for nothing?? :flowers:

Thanks, guys, for all of your help!

JF

There is a known issue with CHKDSK in XP Home and Professional. Here is a Microsoft update (download) that may solve your problem. If it does not please post and let us know.

Good luck.

Some viruses will also do this - try running a free, online scan here to double check your Symantec scan: http://safety.live.com/
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

Thanks so much to both of you. I will complete your recommendations the next time I am on the kids' computer - probably tomorrow. Blessings!
