This depends on what you want to use the laptop for, and how fast you want it to run. For email and general internet browsing almost any will do - but the more you spend, the faster it will be (generally).
First, I'd suggest visiting a store that sells laptops and trying some of them out. Find one that you like (using the prices as a general guideline) and write down the make and model number. (for example, my wife likes her HP because of it's keyboard - but I like my Toshiba because of it's size).
Then, visit http://www.pricegrabber.com
and start looking for deals. I buy frequently from vendors on that site and haven't been burned yet (although I only buy from those vendors that have at least a hint of color in the 5th star of their 5 star rating system).
