Hi,

My husband's computer is having major issues. A few days ago, his hard drive failed and he put in a new hard drive. Ever since putting in the new hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP, when he opens certain programs, they open and then immediately close. It happens to Internet Explorer when you go to certain websites. It won't let you install many spyware programs, the install opens and then immediately shuts down. It won't run AIM, this is the first program that we noticed it on.

Could it be a virus or just a problem with Windows XP? We have wiped the disk clean and reinstalled XP several times?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Could it be a virus or just a problem with Windows XP?

Could be malware related or it could be the result of some other issue.

What type of anti-virus are you using and when was the last time you ran a scan? Have you tried doing a scan in "SAFE MODE"? What anti-malware programs are you trying to install?

Have you tried performing any online Virus scans? Here are a few to choose from:
Trend Micro Housecall <- Use "Autoclean" and manually delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <- Accept default settings. (does not remove adware/spyware but will autoclean for viruses & worms.)
F-Secure Online Scanner <- Be sure to follow the directions on the F-Secure page for proper Installation.
BitDefender Online Virus and Malware Scan <- Add a check by "Autoclean".
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner. <- "Cure" whatever is found, manually delete what it can't cure.
Be sure to read the eTrust Antivirus Scanner Help Guide before scanning.
[Watch the Address bar in IE. You may receive alerts that "This site might require the following ActiveX control...Click here to install...". Click on that alert and then Click Install ActiveX component.]
