Hi zygote,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

1. Unfortunately your log isn't complete; the heading is missing with information on the version of HijackThis and Windows/IE. Please make sure to post a complete log the next time.

2. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entry:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

3. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

4. You're using an outdated version of Java (latest one is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9). Please update and remove the older versions. Do the following:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Then Download and install the newest version from here:

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
5. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Please post the Kaspersky report together with a new HijackThis log.

HI zygote,

Is this too hard for you?

No it isn't, but as you will have realised this is about helping people and learning to help people. Sometimes we, helper trainees and our coaches, need time before coming to a solution.

So don't worry I think I will be back to you 'soon'. :flowers:

Even sooner then I expected. :flowers:

1. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following file in bold:

F:\00_System Bin\Internet\NetUtils\vnc-3.3.7-x86_win32.exe

Do you know this file: F:\00_System Bin\r admin\RADMIN20.EXE? If not I would like to check it out. Please have it scanned at VirusTotal and post back the results in here.

2. Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:

* Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
* Click the "Delete Cookies" button
* Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
* When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):

* Go to Tools > Options.
* Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
* Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
* Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

* Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
* Let it scan your system for files to remove.
* Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
* Press OK to remove them.

3. Don't forget to update Sun Java as instructed.

Please post the results from the Virus Total scan and a fresh HijackThis log for review.

The two files you mentioned were no longer there. I must have trashed them in one of my many virus sweeps.

Everything seems to be running well at the moment....still no idea what killed my 'E' drive??

Hi zygote,

Thank you so much for your help and advice...I do appreciate your position and didn't mean to be testy....apologies.

You're very welcome.

Everything seems to be running well at the moment...

That's good to hear.

....still no idea what killed my 'E' drive??

What do you mean by this since this is the first time you mention this? Please be as specific as possible: error messages, complaints etc.

HijackThis log looks clean, so actually you should be ready to go but I'll wait for your reply on the E-disk.

I have my hard drive partitioned (C, E, F) System files etc are on C drive, F drive has old files and E drive is where I put all my videos, pics etc. My E drive had about 5 Gigs of material. At the height of this intrusion I looked at my E drive and I noticed it had been virtually wiped clean. All my restore points had also been deleted. The other partitions appeared unaffected.

Hi zygote,

I have my hard drive partitioned (C, E, F) System files etc are on C drive, F drive has old files and E drive is where I put all my videos, pics etc. My E drive had about 5 Gigs of material. At the height of this intrusion I looked at my E drive and I noticed it had been virtually wiped clean. All my restore points had also been deleted. The other partitions appeared unaffected.

That's bad but Googling I found a lot of information on recovering data and e.g. this basic tutorial. I suggest you search your way through these sites since they are about free tools/procedures and paid versions. So choose as you like. If you still need my help or advise use this thread but of course there is also the Software and Hardware Subforums.

That said I think you're ready to go; just a few things left to do:

Remove previous restore points and set a new one to purge any malware that may have been backed up:

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

In order to prevent future infections follow these recommendations:

a. Visit Windows Update on a regular basis to stay current with critical updates.

b. Install and run the following free programs:

* Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here!

* Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found
here! Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

* SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here!

* SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here!

* IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Keep all these programs (including your anti-virus) up-to-date and run them regularly.
If you do not update regularly they will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

c. I recommend you to read Tony Klein's excellent article: So how did I get infected in the first place?

d. If you want to fight back the Malware Writers, please take a look here!

Glad I was able to help and if there are any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BleepingComputer Forums, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!

Good luck! :flowers:
