Hi

Is there any way to change the order in which things boot up? I want my firewall (ZoneAlarm) to start before my LAN does.

Many Thanks

Steven

I don't believe this is possible, but I've been wrong before

I know there used to be a program around called bootvis that let you play around with booting, not sure exactly what it did and i now cant find it, but i would think somehow it could be done...

I believe it only allowed things to boot and not to, similar to what Defender does. startup is within seconds of each other, order shouldn't matter that much

So long as you're concerned just about the firewall part, it does start before LAN. At least that's how I understand it, but I too have been wrong before. Sort your Task manager entries by PID, and you'll see that vsmon.exe is invariably one of the first 4-5 in the list. The ZA client starts much later.

That said, I too would like to learn how to change boot order for something else.

I think it's a complicated thing due to dependencies, so I hope that the experts can comment

Here's some interesting articles on the startup process and it's ordering:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;115486
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-program-automatic-startup-locations/

I've looked into this in the past, and finally gave up on it as it required way to much time to understand enough to take advantage of it.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
