When I start up my computer, the screen goes blank before Windows can start. I have XP home edition and while I've had problems with it in the past. it has never done this before. I've tried using the boot disc (CD) that came with the computer, but it says there is no hard drive. I've check and double checked inside the computer and everything is connected and (relatively) dust free. I am completely stumped, could you folks help?

P.S. Ooh spell check, I like.

When you say it comes up black. Do you have a flashing cursor or nothing at all? If it is nothing at all I would guess you have a corrupted video driver. Can you even get to safe mode? If it is a flashing cursor try chaniging the BIOS (motherboard) battery. I know it sounds simply but that battery can make your computer do strange things when it goes bad. $4 at Walmart.
