Posted 18 November 2006 - 06:53 AM

came home last night and found my dad had used pc and there were lots and lots of popup screens together with a suspicious icon in the system tray saying 'critical system errors!'. the icon pops up a balloon every few minutes prompting me to download 'virusbusters'. he informed me that he had tried this virusbusters thing which scanned the pc but of course prompted him to buy.

i have run mcafee and it detected nothing. also downloaded spybot which detected lots of malware which i removed but a few remain which i cant seem to get rid of including this system tray thing

here is my hijack this log.

Welcome to Bleeping Computer, marcopolo.

* Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi marcopolo,

* You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

* Locate the AVG Anti-Spyware icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

* Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

* Reboot into Safe mode,

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the C:\rapport.txt, the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan and a new hijackthis log, please.

Hi marcopolo,

* I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
  • False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
  • System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either AVG or Mcafee - if you remove Mcafee please understand you will have to install a new firewall as the Mcafee one will have been uninstalled also.

* Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
* I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

* Please Go to Start> Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall if listed:

Malware Scanner

Please see here

Reboot afterwards.

* Please re-open HijackThis and scan. Check the following entry if found:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Malware Scanner] C:\Program Files\MalwareRemover.com\Malware Scanner\MalScr.exe

Close any open windows except for HijackThis then click on Fix checked.

Delete the following folder if still present:

C:\Program Files\MalwareRemover.com

* Restart your computer, post back a new hijackthis log and tell us how the computer is running now, please.

its running fine thanks.

i havent done anything really serious on it though. there was a couple of links on the fora here and i kinda spent all evening browsing flight sim links without doing anything taxing.

earlier today i tried rome total war and it ran fine and that was before the last step - although the pc had crashed another time before i played.

its late here now, tomorrow ill ask my dad to try his flight sim as thats when the problems began really. he had finished his surfing session (and infected the pc), loaded flight sim and it crashed (so he says). he then tried to rectify the problem and probably made it worse. i arrived home with lots of popups and flashing icons......................

hopefully i will get back to you tomorrow evening.

thanks again

Problems again!

This morning i was using the pc and it crashed totally to the 'blue screen of death'. it didnt give me chance to write anything about the specific error message.

also now my dad tried flight sim (2004) but it keeps crashing-just the game and not the whole pc and with an error message. i took photos but cant seem to find an upload method here. if u like i can upload to my own server so u see.

i had better give u some background info on this pc as quite frankly im not sure if this is to do with malware although it could be fallout.

this pc has just come back from 'open heart surgery' initially the builder (my own uncles company) gave me the wrong video card as i had initially requested the matrox parhelia for use with 3 screens (yes, dads flight sim :flowers: ) so the pc had to go back and we had the parhelia installed. after this the pc started giving me messed up graphics and occaisionaly crashing. we took it back and apparantly the motherboard was at fault along with some memory! because this is a small island a replacement motherboard was not available and so the pc was reformated and a smaller temporary motherboard was installed on loan until the replacement arrived. a month or so ago the new Mb arrived and was replaced together with new memory and a reformat. till now it has been working and i hope i dont have to go through the saga again as the amount of time i have wasted is starting to become annoying.

i dont know if it is malware but i told you this also just in case.

the log is below.

major drama here. you seem to have saved the pc from cancer but it died of a heart attack

it wouldnt boot up and so i took it to a different pc technician and both the graphics card and motherboard died. thankfully the new motherboard uses the same chipset so i didnt need to reformat. all seems to be fine now with no crashes at all.

im annoyed and pleased at the same time. annoyed because this is the second time i had to replace the motherboard (apparantly msi are rubbish) and i lost the expensive parhelia. losing the parhelia though gives me reason to buy the triple head to go and the freedom to upgrade my graphics card when i need.
