A GREEN LIGHT WILL COME ON THE FRONT OF THE TOWER BUT THAT'S IT. SOMETIMES I HAVE TO JUST WAIT TILL THE NEXT DAY TO TRY AND START IT UP, I UNPLUG THE POWER SUPPLY. SOMETIMES IT WILL COME ON AND SOMETIMES I HAVE TO WAIT SOME MORE. I HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY IN THE TOWER, STILL DID NOT HELP. MY COMPUTER IS A GATEWAY-WINDOWS XP. PLEASE HELP!!!!

THANK YOU!

Hi kristamoo, First I want to say welcome to BC.
Now .. we'll need some more info to work with.

How much RAM does it have
How old is the PC
What Antivirus and spyware /malware programs do you have and when were they last run and updated
What firewall

When it happens
Are you getting a blue screen
Do you get any messages
What are you doing .. program(s), gaming, photo, music etc..
Are you on/offline or both

You can run the Event viewer (information on errors and crashes) and post that info
BC tutorial How To Use the Event Viewer Applet

You may have a heat or damaged RAM issue
Before touching parts inside the PC touch your fingers to the metal chaasis of your case,to disharge ststic from your body.
Can you touch the fins on the CPU (the heatsync) and see if it's hot. Warm is OK. Hot is like an ouch or pullback.
Cleanout the inside of your PC of dust bunnies, clean all fan bades and the fins on CPU
You can also run a RAM check Memtest86
and post the results

Hello...

Kristamoo has not been able to respond or even get her hard drive to come on. She said she will keep trying and hopefully get back on this fantastic site!

Thank you!

I'll check back to see if any reply. I sure feel bad for her. She thought she was getting a new computer, never used. Came with a land/home package... Any fixes for those guys?

Can you get a hold of another power supply to swap with and se if that's the problem.. It may be the cheapest attemp at a solution if you had to get another.

Hello...

Information re: Kristamoo's computer.

No blue screen.

Norton Internet Security and firewall 2006 is being used, also AdAware.

No message screens show before it shuts off.

Does not matter if on line or off. Mostly notices it shuts down when off line.
Has Q-West DSL connection.

Inside has no signs of dust bunnies.

Last time it shut off, Adaware was running a scan. She saw 3 critical and six other problems. When it shut down, she heard an obnoxious noise. Has not started up since.
The green light on the tower comes on and the fan is on until it shuts down. Green light stays on.

Another power source? Like a power cord or?

Thank you!

Deb

Another source or supply an example
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....tt+Power+Supply

Can you see if the fan on the power supply is turning. The unit should have a label on it that staes it's wattage.
If you can exchange the existing one with one of equal or greater wattage. Maybe you know someone that has one you can try, this is the cheapest repair option.

That sound may be the death of the hard drive and that's obiously more costly in more ways than one.
