Ok, well i'm really good at following instructions, i'm also really good at removing bugs from my computer. However, this (bleep-bleep) is really giving me a bad couple of days. every time i use hijackthis to fix it, once i open an IE window the little bug restores itself. system restore is off, i've run spybot adaware in safe mode. and it keeps coming back. so without further delay, here's the hijackthis log.

Try going to the source of the problem. First print off a copy of the log files. Then go START, RUN, type regedit, click ok and run throught the HKEY's to remove the infected files. Also you could try downloading and installing the free version of RegVac and run RoboVac.

polarbear, we thank you for your willingness to help, but we prefer to use HijackThis and other tools to solve these type problems. And we also ask that you not make such suggestions unless you are a member of the HJT team. You may know how to do what you're saying, but most people who post logs don't and finding the bad files & registry entries is the whole point of having someone with experience to look at the logs.

coolal (like the user name) I hope you'll have some patience with us. You've got a new and very nasty bugger there and if I'm not mistaken a fix is being worked on as we speak. It involves more than simple registry editing and removal of files. Hang in there. Someone who knows more about this than me will be with you shortly.

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso

Please do not open Internet Explorer during any portion of this process.

Step 1:

Click on start, the control panel, then administrative programs, then services. Look for a service called Network Security Service. Double click on the that service and click stop. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step 2:
Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

apikt.exe (prob the name of the file from the service above)
apind.exe

Step 3:
I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\bqpvl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apind.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apind.exe
The file from the services above. Probably (C:\WINDOWS\apikt.exe)
Also delete any files that have the same name as these files but end with a dll. You should see them right next to each other.

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step 4:
Then run hijackthis and fix these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\bqpvl.dll/sp.html#96676
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://bqpvl.dll/index.html#96676
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://bqpvl.dll/index.html#96676
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\bqpvl.dll/sp.html#96676
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = res://bqpvl.dll/index.html#96676
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\bqpvl.dll/sp.html#96676
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3F18B8F1-6294-E087-254D-BFBE52283D28} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\apind.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [apind.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\apind.exe

Reboot your computer and post a new log.

I think the one I had is similiar to yours if you look at my log at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p?showtopic=706 I cleaned it the hard way but it is very nasty, I tried everything like you did, but it just come back whenever I open a new page with IE.

Anyway, Looking forward to see how it will be fix and most of all how to prevent it.

Please accept my apolgy for for the post. I am a member of another forum on the net and have been asked to be a Moderator due to my ability and the fact that I have slightly over 400 posts in a little under 5 months.. Unfortunately, even though Hijack this is a very good program there are times when it cannot resolve all issues. Some times manual removal is the most effective method and the most precise method. If we consistently rely on software to resolve our issues we will never learn what our pc is all about. And when the software fails we will have no idea what to do next.

Please accept my resignation from this forum. I always thought tech forums were to help people to resolve issues. If I may make a suggestion, posts such as the one to me from Papakid are viewed by many people. When they read such posts they are going to be noticed as politics and power issues. When posts are not appropriate they should be dealt with by the Admin or Mods. When people see these issues it tends to turn them away and they seek help else where. The appropriate measure would be to PM the offender so as not to make the person look like an inferior or a fool.

As far as my credentials, I am A+ certified, own and operate a small business for computer security and I am an employee of a major library system in Canada maintaining 780 pc's on the Windows Server 2003.

I thank Grinler for offering me to go to school but I really feel there is no need for me to do so. Perhaps if inquires to my association with another forum had been investigated and posts from that forum had been viewed it would be evident schooling would not be required.

Good luck with your site. Daniel

Coolal,

I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [apilp.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\apilp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ipls.exe] C:\WINDOWS\ipls.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ntdk32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\ntdk32.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and delete the following files:

Then delete these files or directories
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apilp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ipls.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ntdk32.exe

Disable System Restore. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore
or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.
