Hi folks,

I'd like to receive some help. I have recently activated a dsl connection, and whenever I am connected the pc gets stuck for some reason. This doesn't seem to happen when I'm off-line, and I don't know if it could be the dsl line itself or the new antivirus I have installed (avast).

Avast says my memory is clean when it tests it at startup, and it doesn't find anything infected after a thorough scan. I have the resident protection set to normal, and maybe it's just that that's slowing everything down to the point the os freezes?

This happens (as far I can tell now) when I try to start MSN, e-mule or open a web-link with the "open in a new page " function.

Ad-Aware, Spybot, CWShredder and CCleaner have found no issues at all (well they had, but the problem still remains even after deleting the few malware I had).

I have also recently installed Spyware Blaster, and I had it block all items it knows. Was this good or bad?

I'm finally posting my log, please tell me if there's something else I should try. I thought of posting here as soon as I started to have problems because you already helped me in the past (I had a different machine).

Immediately after posting I got a shutdown message, and I suspect it's due to some sasser variant. As for now I cancelled it with the shutdown -a .bat, but I suppose it will give me more problems soon.

Thanks again.

EDIT: I am almost certain I caught one of those viruses that don't allow you to do you usual tasks as administrator: after trying to use programs like MSN or e-mule I can't access to the ctrl-alt-del menu, and when I try to switch off I only get the "disconnect user" option (sorry if the wording is not correct, my os and I are italian).

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and save that file to your desktop. Note: This is NOT the Anti Virus from AVG.

When the trial period expires it becomes feature-limited freeware but is still worth keeping as a good on-demand scanner.
1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
o Next select the "Start Update" button. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed, select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
6. Under "Reports"
o Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
o Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will run it in safe mode.
1. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning as it may interfere with the scanning process:
2. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the icon on your desktop.
3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
4. AVG will now begin the scanning process. Please be patient as this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete, do the following:
5. If you have any infections you will be prompted. Then select "Apply all actions."
6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower lef- hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file. This is important).
8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.
Post the log from AVG and a new HiJack log

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HiJackThis – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

O23 - Service: Print Spooler Service (cjmpys41aeyl) - Unknown owner - C:\z.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: Network helper Service (MSDisk) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\irdvxc.exe" /service (file missing)

O23 - Service: Microsoft sdk core (sdk) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe (file missing)
=========================
Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find this exact name

Print Spooler Service

Rightclick and choose "Properties". Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Click Apply then OK. File-Exit the Services utility.

Repeat for - Network helper Service and Microsoft sdk core

START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

Hi, and thanks for your help.

I followed your instructions and I think everything worked. The 3 services I disabled were already stopped, so I didn't have to change that.
Also, everything in the Temp folder was deleted.

This is the new log:

Isn't the 020 line suspicious?

Another question: when I started the system in safe mode I was asked to choose between two accounts, mine and the admin one, that I didn't even know was there. I am the only user of that computer, so I don't know if it's normal... This happened the other time I used safe mode too.

As for the current status of the system, everything seemed to work fine: I could use MSN and so on, but after a few minutes (I was saving a txt file, so nothing particularly demanding) a few things got stuck. I couldn't use the ctrl-alt-del menu (I wanted to try that to close notepad) and anything on the navigation bar, from the Start menu to the little area next to the clock on the right (I forget its name, sorry). Clicking doesn't give any result, so to reboot or close the session I had to use the power button (the machine is a laptop and I have no reset button). IE worked fine though, as well as avast resident thingie.

At least I didn't get the shutdown countdown prompt... Any idea what the problem could be?

Hello.

I downloaded what you told me. During that on-line session I had to use the "shutdown -a" command again to prevent the sasser to work. Anyway I made it. Note that when I opened the Start menu to close the session I only got the "disconnect user" option, and when I did I was asked if I really wanted to switch off since other users were connected...

Anyway, I updated java with no problems and deleted the older version I had.

Spy Sweeper was a bit harder to get to work: I wasn't able to successfully update my definitions since using the dsl line made the whole os freeze as usual. I had to use the slow 56k connection, and after a couple hours I finally managed to update the program. So apparently the problems are only connected to the use of the dsl line, does it make any sense? Also, with the 56k connection avast never prompted me about blocked exploits from dcom or lsass, which were rather frequent with the dsl line.

Anyway with the first scan the Sweeper didn't detect any malicious items, and no tab to save a log appeared.

But then I checked the quarantine (because the program had prompted me, asking if AVG was allowed to operate) and it contains one object, namely sdbot, and 2 objects have been blocked by the shield, but I don't know how to verify what these are.

As for the HJT log, here it is:

I installed SP2 and enabled Automatic Update to let Windows update all the other stuff, and it seems that for now everything is working alright.

If you have any further suggestion it would be much apreciated, as everything you have already done for me.

Thanks a lot.
