here we go, i was simply copying files from cd to my hard drive when my computer shut down then restarted taking alot longer then normal. It finally loads up with no start menu or icons on the desktop. The only thing that
works is the task manager. Any thoughts on how to get the start bar up and running again?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode, and running System Restore?
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / Restore my computer to an earlier time / Next

Try running "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) from the Run dialog in Task Manager. Does that restore your desktop? If so, then I suspect your Windows installation has become damaged.

You may want to try a repair install of XP by following these instructions: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
