When I turn on my laptop I can only enter safe mode, I ran spybot three times much to no avail.
I have had this problem before, but spybot did the trick.

I have had this problem before, but spybot did the trick.

Some possible causes and fixes:
  • A good starting point would be to tell us what exactly happens when you attempt to start the machine in normal mode.
  • If it boots to Safe Mode, then it is a startup item or an issue with the user profile. Try creating a temp user and see if you can log on to that, if that doesn't work, you can try the slow process of doing a complete checkdisk and then using msconfig to prevent things from loading.
  • Click Start > run > msconfig > boot.ini tab. Make sure the boots options are not checked. eg /SAFEBOOT which changes the boot.ini file to make your machine start in safe mode.
  • Have you tried System Restore from Safe Mode? If you know when the problem started then you can use System Restore to return to a point well before this date.
  • Have you tried a Repair install followed by re-applying updates?
  • Can you do Safe Mode with networking? If you can get online, please run an online antivirus check from at least two and preferably three of the following sites
    BitDefender
    Computer Associates Online Virus Scan
    Panda's ActiveScan
    Trend Micro Housecall
    Windows Live Safety Center Free Online Scan scans.
  • Try booting to the command prompt and type: scanreg / fix. Then reboot and see if you can boot to normal. If not, then you might once again boot to the command prompt and type: scanreg / restore
  • Have you installed new software? You could be getting a conflict between the system driver drivers. You may need to change your computer settings or remove the newly installed software that is causing the problem. You can reinstall the service pack or the entire operating system, if necessary. If you can't use the conventional methods of removing software, you may have to do it manually.
  • Windows may be trying to start a service but the service doesn't start (and windows doesn't realize that the service has frozen). This could be caused by another service or driver.
  • Does the system log say anything relevant? (Left click on My Computer and select Manage > System Tools\Event Viewer\System). Look for error messages around the times when you have tried to normally boot the machine.
  • Have you tried running CHKDSK? Corrupted files may be causing your startup problem.
  • See if the option to Start from last good startup is available.
  • Do a System Repair. Boot from the Window XP cd and go past the Recovery Console to the Install menu. Select Repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the XP updates. Be sure the firewall and antivirus program is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Visit Microsoft Windows Update. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
