Hi all,

This looks to be a great site, thanx to all involved.

Things have started going terribly wrong! (might not be as bad as it could be, but im starting to panic)
BLEEPING computer indeed! *&^%$#@

I have read through a log of similar, if not exactly the same problems, that looks to have been fixed now, by Amateur. Good work! Up for it again?
I dont have the confidence, or the knowhow to follow the method without some direct help. Hopefully it wont take quite as much effort on your part this time after hammering it all out (at least) once before.

Ive read up much info and tips on this site already. Im following the suggestions and changing my computer and net habits to be more prapaired in the future.
Ive run through all the "Preparation Guid" now, and am feeling slightly better about this.

Stinger didnt come up with anything.
Norton internet security came up with a bunch of spyware and cleaned them off.
Adaware did the same.
Spybot brought up a few more, but the Toolbar888 one wont go.

Nothin in those said anything about the vs add-in, and it, if not something else, has compleatly taken over Internet Explorer.
Whenever i open IE, it gets hijacked and spits me to a "your computer might be at risk" download this, or that, or "run this scan now" type of page. Error messages seem to keep poping up from nowhere with the same sort of crap. I close them, without touching any part of them.
They look a little like a MS security centre page, with similar logo's and all. But ive never seen them before, and they automaticaly open other pages of junk.


Just now i get a Norton Antivirus alert, as follows:

Im gonna turn this computer off right now, and await your reply on another one.
Im WAYYYYYYYYYYY outa my depth here.

Backdoor Functionality:

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have a Very Dangerous infection on this machine.

It allows outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present...
IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to disconnect from the Internet, re-format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. In that instance, even after removal of the infection, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect. IN THIS CASE we have WORM_RBOT.BYX.
If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
    Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.

Hi jamielaw,

Thanx very much for your information.
I have not had that computer online, or even turned on since the end of my last post.
I have access to a clean and online computer, although only occasionaly, so this process may take a while.

With the information and work on it, i must clean it and at least retrieve some of the stuff from this machine. Most of it is irreplacable! Yes, i know, tsk tsk, backup, BACKUP! But, whats done is done.
I will really need walk through advice on this one.
Sofar, i will follow your suggestions and advice (much to be done just in that) then wait for further instruction.

What i need to know first is what is safe to do with this machine?
I know now that i cannot connect it to the net, but, can i turn it on and use it to at least print out some invoices?
If i copy anything to disc now, will it transfer the infection? (simple files, not programs)
This includes the logs to be posted here. What is the common method? Copy to disc then post here from this computer? or is that risking this one to infection?

I understand and appreciate your situation. I'll try my best to cover all your questions...

Yes - I'd recommend you disconnect completely from the Internet whilst we carry out these fixes.

Without seeing the files I cannot be certain. But they should be okay. I recommend you scan things here before copying it to your new storage device. This website uses scanning engines from lots of antivirus software so is statistically more reliable than a normal antivirus:

Be careful is my advice. The best method is to get logs off your computer than copy them to your current computer via a memory stick or similar device. There is always a risk of infection but it is relatively low - to be safe I recommend scanning all files that you bring to/from your infected computer with the link above.

Just to enforce...In this situation I would get all the irreplaceable files and then format the computer. This is the best option and also the safest. But the choice is yours of course and I will attempt to clean it if thats what you want - let me know.
