Hi guys, I am having some trouble with our computer as it is running slowly and has pop-ups spawning. At one stage I had no anti-virus protection for a period of time after replacing a hard-drive and forgetting to reinstall. Now, I am currently using Trend-Micro 2005 edition with Windows XP Professional Edition. So far I have run Ad-Awave scans, spybot scans, Counterspy and so forth and removed all I could. This has not resolved the problem as pop-ups continue to spawn and occasionally trend micro detects worms, trojans etc, all of which I quarrantine but problems persist.

Here is Hijack this log after scanning and removing everything I could, thanks in advance.

Hello Samwise30,

I see you have spywareremover installed.
Spywareremover is on the list of Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs. From within add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist by double-clicking on the following entries:
spywareremover

Disable your antivirus program and go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee. :flowers:

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab.
Click on "Click here to export scan".
Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop.
Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser.
Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here.
Post the BitDefender log.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune DO NOT run it yet.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (formerly Ewido)

1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept the default installation path: C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. You can select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Sheild' and 'Automatic Updates'. If you choose to do this, then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
7. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
8. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method so Windows will start with minimal drivers and running processes.
To do this restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly.
A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 as follows:

1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.

Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.

Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).

Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).

Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).

Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".

2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans.
Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

When done, submit the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 log, BitDefender log and a  fresh Hijackthis log.

Hi Samwise30,

Looks like it removed a whole lot of viruses and trojans. Have you run the AVG Anti-Spyware scanner yet?

Post it when it is done. :flowers:

Also, Spybot found something Called CommandService under the registry directory which Spybot doesn't seem to be able to destroy.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\CmdService
AND
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CmdService

And also, my dad said there was a popup by Counter Spy I pressume saying that a registry file was trying to create itself. Dad said he clicked on "Block" every time so far. Either way, I'll have to ask him for better details than that when he gets home. Anyway, thanks for all your help so far, I'll see if I can convince dad to donate some money because all your help has been much appreciated,

Cheers.

Hi Samwise30,

Also, Spybot found something Called CommandService under the registry directory which Spybot doesn't seem to be able to destroy.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\CmdService
AND
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CmdService

The above is a bug in Spybot. I have a fix for it, and will use it later.

And also, my dad said there was a popup by Counter Spy I pressume saying that a registry file was trying to create itself. Dad said he clicked on "Block" every time so far.

Good that he blocked it.
I dont think we have you clean of malware yet.

Open HijackThis
Go to ‘config’
Go to ‘misc tools’
Press the button ‘open uninstall manager’
Press 'save list'
A notepad file will open.
Post the content here in your reply.
Close HijackThis.

Please post a fresh Hijackthis log and tell me how the computer is running.

And the computer seems to be running quite a lot better, however I still hot a trojan/worm warning from Trendmico this morning. Overall though, it certainly seems to be running better.

Hi Samwise30,

I hate to the bearer of bad news but, your log shows a very dangerous Trojan is residing on your PC.

Described here http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintas...brary/ibm00001/ as Trojan.W32.Torpig
The Trojan attempts to steal passwords, as well as logging keypresses and open window titles to text files and periodically sends the collected information to a remote user via HTTP. The Trojan downloads and executes additional files from a remote site. Configuration files may also be downloaded which define further behaviors.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, Your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. If it were on my PC I would not hesitate for a moment to do so. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will of course do our best to clean the computer of any infections that we can see but, as I already stated, we can in no way guarantee it to be trustworthy.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do.

Okay, I have two questions for now which I am relaying from dad seeing as he is away for the week. Firstly, does reformating wipe partitions of a HD because we have our primary HD partitioned into several other sections. And will it wipe our other hard drive that is still in the computer from when we upgraded?

Secondly, I how do you go about re-formatting as I've never done this before. Thanks for all your help so far, and sorry for the late reply.
