One of the games I have been playing recently upgraded to the October distribution of Direct X 9.0c, so I went to go do the same on my computer. However, the web installer will not work and I downloaded the end-user installer and that will not work either. I get the same error in both cases, that there was an unspecified or internal error and that I should look in either DirectX.log or DXError.log (contents posted below). I've already tried installing the files multiple times, tried reinstalling Windows over itself in the hopes that the problem would be righted, and now I'm completely out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

System specs:

XP Home Edition
AMD X2 4800+
3 GB RAM
7900 512 MB video card
(not exactly sure about my hard drive, but there is more than enough free space for installation)
dxdiag claims I have version 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

DirectX.log:

Hi MrVulcan.
Provided you are using an english version of windows, go here, download and install the redistributable version.
After you except the license agreement, you will be prompted to choose a location to extract the files. Any folder will do. When all the files are extracted, double click the DXSETUP.exe to install. When it's done, you can go back and delete all the files you extracted if you wish. The version shown on the system tab of dxdiag (9.0c 4.09.0000.0904) will not change. The Oct. update addresses individual files and security issues only.

I cannot do so. The installer returns a fatal error code -9. I've looked the code up on the Direct X support page and the files those directions tell me to rename do not exist in my unzipped files.

See if any of the following will help:

The web installer returns a code -9 error (internal). The end-user runtime does not work either. It gets to the stage where it begins copying files, but then says the installation is complete before any files are actually copied.

Just an update...

Was hoping to find other solutions to my problem and I stumbled upon the following set of instructions on a website. It had several positive comments saying that it worked, so I thought I might try it out.

1. Get DirectX Uninstall program. There are lot of them on the web. Search using “directx uninstall download” keyword will do. Most of them are freeware so don’t worry about wasting extra money.
2. Run the program you’ve just downloaded. I think all, if not most of them, will ask you to restart the computer. Do it.
3. Once your computer restarted, your DirectX 9.0b (or 9.0a) is gone. Instead, you’ll get the native DirectX 8.1 that come with the original Windows XP installation.
4. Try to install DirectX 9.0c now. If it works, you’re done. If it’s not, go on with the next step. Mine won’t install in this step, but I read some comment/solution on the web said that it did work, so give it a try first.
5. Download DirectX 9.0b distribution package. You will also need 9.0c distribution package, so download it if you don’t have it yet. Extract them on any folder you want, for example: DX9B (for DirectX 9.0b) and DX9C (for DirectX 9.0c).
6. Now here goes the tricky part. Copy all the CAB files from your DirectX 9.0c folder (DX9C) into your DirectX 9.0b folder (DX9B). Choose “YES” when prompted to overwrite files. Note that copying NON-CAB files from DX9B into DX9C might also work (I didn’t try it so I can’t guarantee it).
7. Run the DirectX installation program from the 9.0B folder (DX9B). DirectX 9.0c installation should work now.

Unfortunately, this didn't work for me. I have 9.0c installed, but the game I am interested in running does not recognize the D3DX_31.dll as being installed. Additionally, my DirectX folder is empty(!) so I fear something major might have gone wrong due to my impatience. =( Everything else that requires DirectX still works fine though, so I'm not sure exactly what steps to take next.
