Working on a badly infected system -- HP with WinXP Home. Cleaned it up as much as practible with the likes of
SpyBot S&D, Ad-Aware, Ewido, AVG. Lots os stuff removed. But still running real slow. The manual cleanup is being hampered by inability to change folder options to reveal hidden files/directories. Just will not change, in normal or safe mode. Give it up with a Ops re-install or is there a way to reset folder options to respond to changes?

If you're comfortable editing the registry, take a look here. The article describes how to do the edit manually. It mentions a reg file but no download link is available.

Edit: found this writeup describing a different way that a virus can do this trick. Also would require a regedit to fix.
