The Internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a complete substitute for life.

The most important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use ( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx ) is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates. + =

Hi dockenangel:

I think the best is the one that works best for you.

I've tried some of the bigger and supposedly better programs but found that they tended to hog my limited resources and to slow things down generally.

I finally settled on Avast because it's very light on system resources and has always worked flawlessly.

It also has some really neat features like its animated toolbar icons - two little blue balls that start rolling to let you know when it's busy.

There's also a voice announcement after its regular automatic updates, and a popup siren followed by a voice announcement - CAUTION! A VIRUS HAS BEEN DETECTED! - when it detects a virus.

For me it's a light, effective, and fun program with which I'm perfectly satisfied.

Cheers,

scratcher.

Yes, those are also some of the things I like about it and why I use it.
